Age, Growth and Reproductive Period of White Bream, Blicca bjoerkna (L., 1758) in Lake Ladik, Turkey

Abstract: in order to determine the age, growth, and reproductive season. Fork lengths and weights of these samples varied between 11.5-24.3 cm and 22.80-259.00 g, respectively. Age estimates obtained from scales and vertebrae were compared to determine the most reliable bony structure for ageing. The precision analyses indicated that scales were the most appropriate hard structures for determining the age of white bream. Ages of all the specimens ranged from I to VI years and age group III was dominant. The parameters … Show more

“…In the investigated sites, more females than males were caught, therefore the results for males were based on a lower number of specimens. In other locations, females also quantitatively dominated over males, with a female-to-male ratio of 1 : 0.35 in Lake Kuş (Balık et al 1999-cited after Yılmaz et al 2012, and 1 : 0.53 in Lake Sapanca (Hamalosmanoğ-lu 2003-cited after Yılmaz et al 2012), although other authors recorded more equal proportions of the sexes: 1 : 1.07 in Lake Sapanca (Gürsoy unpublished * ) and 1 : 0.98 in Ladik Lake (Yılmaz et al 2012(Yılmaz et al , 2015.…”

“…Secondly, lo w feeding intensity in summer and spring could be attributed to reproduction season of the white bream. Yılmaz et al (2015) stated that spawning season of the wh ite bream population in Lake Ladik is between May and June. Sourinejad et al (2015) indicated that most aquatic animals generally do not feed during the reproductive period, or their feeding habits are greatly decreased and there is a relat ionship between the reproductive season and feeding activity.…”

“…The white bream does not have any commercial value because of its unpleasant taste (Yılmaz et al, 2015) and having a great nu mber of intermuscular bones (Okgerman et al, 2012). However, it is an important food supply for predator species inhabiting aquatic habitats.…”

“…Spawning of the white bream in different regions of Europe takes place in a similar period from the beginning of May to the end of June, or even to the beginning of July in Poland , Northern Russia (Berg, 1949), Belgium (Rinchard & Kestemont ,1996;2003), Germany (Spratte & Hartmann, 1997;Molls, 1999). The earliest spawning was recorded in Turkey in April (Yılmaz et al, 2012;Okgerman et al, 2012). Spawning only in May has been observed in the waters of Russia (Slastenenko, 1956) and Austria (Hacker, 1979).…”
