BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: All women experience menopause in their late forties, sufficient knowledge and a positive attitude about menopause is essential for women to overcome the changes associated with menopause. Female prisoners have significant unmet needs related to transitional menopause experience because a majority of them are illiterate and from an underprivileged class and limited access to health services. Our objective is to explore the menopause experiences of women incarcerated in jail. METHODOLOGY: A semi-structured questionnaire was used, 48 women were interviewed using face-to-face interview technique. Participants were selected by convenience sampling. The study was conducted in Kot Lakh Pat jail Lahore among female prisoners, age ranging from 40 to 60 years. RESULTS: Mean age of women was 45.4 +4.6 years, about 44(91.6%) were aware of menopause, while only 4(8.3%) were aware of its health effects. 44(91.6%) of female prisoners viewed it as a natural process, and 4(8.3%) viewed it as a disease. 41(85.4%) of women are happy with the transition to menopause, while 7(14.5%) are anxious and want to menstruate again. There were statistically significant differences in the Somatic symptoms and psychological symptoms (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The majority of female prisoners were concerned about symptoms even though they did not go for consultation due to a lack of information and health services in prison. To increase public health awareness and reduce the magnitude of menopause-related symptoms, there is a need to develop health care services in the context of treatment and prevention for women prisoners in their present locality.

Menopausal arthritis, a form of osteoarthritis manifests as joint pain and inflammation, that occurs early in menopause and may continue to get worse as time goes on. It is well known that Estrogen helps to reduce inflammation in women and there exists a relationship between falling estrogen levels and arthritis though the exact mechanism is still not fully clear. During menopause when estrogen levels decline, Hot flashes, Night sweats, Mood swings, Fatigue, Weight gain and Vaginal dryness are common symptoms experienced. One of the lesser-known result is increase in inflammation, causing discomfort pain, swelling and stiffness of the joints and the condition is called 'menopausal arthritis'. Early menopause has higher risk of all associated health problems. Menopause itself should set in around the age of 46-47 years in Indian women. We present a case of early menopause onset (as indicated by first delayed and irregular menses) accompanied by joint pains not responding to routine analgesics. A 44-year-old, housewife, reported with swelling and pain in both the ankles, toes and foot pain in November 2020, to a local practitioner. After physical examination and some basic investigations, he treated her with analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs but with poor results in the remission of the pain. During the next menstrual cycle, which was delayed by 2 weeks (after 6 weeks instead of 4 weeks she was used to) the number of joints involved, and severity of the pain increased. This time they consulted a private Orthopedic specialist in the nearest town, who again after a battery of investigations including serological assessment of Rheumatoid Arthritis factor made provisional diagnosis of 'Polyarthritis with seronegative RA-Menopausal Arthritis. She was put on a combination of corticosteroids, NSAIDs and anti-rheumatoid drugs since mid-May 2021. While the follow-up visit is due next week, she has nearly 50% relief by now.

Background: Menopause is a normal physiological process of cessation of menses in women.During menopausal period women can experience many symptoms. These symptoms can be severe enough to affect their quality of life (QOL). The characteristics of rural women can affect the manifestations and treatment of their health problems. Aim of the study: to assess the relation between menopausal symptoms among rural women and their quality of life. Subjects and Method: Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study design. Setting: The Rural Health Unit of Ceber bay rural village in Tanta city. Subjects: A convenient sample of 400 menopausal women who experienced stop of menstrual cycle for at least 12 months and free from chronic diseases. Tools of the study: Three tools were used by to obtain the necessary data for this study. Tool I: A structured interview schedule: which included two parts: Part (1): Socio demographic characteristics of menopausal women, Part (2): Obstetrical history of menopausal women. Tool II: Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) questionnaire. Tool III: World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL BREF). Results: Less than half (48%)of rural menopausal women had a moderate menopausal symptom and more than one-quarter (27.3%) of them had a mild symptom. About one-quarter (24.7%) of them had a severe symptom. More than half (52.0%) of the studied menopausal rural women had a good quality of life and less than one-half (47.4%) of them had fair level of quality of life. Conclusion: The QOL of menopausal rural women is affected by their menopausal symptoms where a negative high significant correlation was found between the total score of menopausal rating scale of the studied menopausal rural women and the total score of their QOL. Recommendations: Develop specific health educational programs aimed to improving the quality of life of menopausal rural women and management of their problems and complains.
