Ag@Au Concave Cuboctahedra: A Unique Probe for Monitoring Au-Catalyzed Reduction and Oxidation Reactions by Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract: We report a facile synthesis of Ag@Au concave cuboctahedra by titrating aqueous HAuCl4 into a suspension of Ag cuboctahedra in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), NaOH, and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) at room temperature. Initially, the Au atoms derived from the reduction of Au(3+) by AA are conformally deposited on the entire surface of a Ag cuboctahedron. Upon the formation of a complete Au shell, however, the subsequently formed Au atoms are preferentially deposited onto the Au{100} facets, resulting in th… Show more

“…UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy are the commonly used techniques for in situ investigation of metal-catalyzed reactions [11][12][13][14]. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy can provide the reactant transformation information of the reacting systems conveniently and facilely.…”

“…At t =120 min, the spectrum remained essentially the same except for a slight increase in intensity for the peaks. Taken together, we believe that the Au islands could serve as a catalyst to facilitate the reduction of 4‐NTP by NaBH 4 . Once NaBH 4 was completely consumed in the reaction solution, the Ag atoms in the outmost surface could activate O 2 in the aqueous solution for the oxidation of 4‐ATP to trans ‐DMAB …”
