Aerobic Epoxidation of Olefin by Platinum Catalysts Supported on Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Abstract: We report platinum catalysts for the efficient aerobic oxidation of olefins to form epoxides and/or derived glycol monoethers. The catalystsdiaqua and dichloro Pt II complexes supported by the ligand di(2-pyridine)methanesulfonate (dpms)are most active when they are covalently tethered to mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). Supporting the molecular Pt complexes on the MSNs prevents bimolecular catalyst deactivation. Using this strategy, >40 000 turnovers are achieved for the aerobic oxidation of norborne… Show more

“…The bimolecular deactivation of a catalyst can be stopped using catalyst immobilization, which has been used successfully in our recent development of (dpms)Pt‐based catalysts for aerobic olefin epoxidation . Other potential approaches to counteract bimolecular catalyst deactivation may involve introducing sterically protecting groups near the reactive metal center.…”

“…Besides applications in biomedicine, Li et al prepared pinhole-free Au@SiO 2 nanoparticles as photocatalysts and sensing probes and revealed the design rules for engineering efficient plasmon photocatalysts . Dominik et al report mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNP)-supported PtII as a heterogeneous catalyst that was used for the efficient aerobic oxidation of norbornene . Recently, quite a few review articles have systematically summarized the synthesis methods and applications of the core–shell structures, in particular those with hollow cavities, , which indicate the tremendous potential of such complex nanoarchitectures.…”

“…21 Dominik et al report mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNP)-supported PtII as a heterogeneous catalyst that was used for the efficient aerobic oxidation of norbornene. 22 Recently, quite a few review articles have systematically summarized the synthesis methods and applications of the core−shell structures, in particular those with hollow cavities, 23,24 which indicate the tremendous potential of such complex nanoarchitectures. At present, the methods used to fabricate such core−shell mesoporous hollow architectures can be mainly classified into a template-assisted method, a self-assembly method, and a postgrafting method.…”
