Advancement of Knowledge of Brucella Over the Past 50 Years

Abstract: Fifty years ago, bacteria in the genus Brucella were known to cause infertility and reproductive losses. At that time, the genus was considered to contain only 3 species: Brucella abortus, Brucella melitensis, and Brucella suis. Since the early 1960s, at least 7 new species have been identified as belonging to the Brucella genus (Brucella canis, Brucella ceti, Brucella inopinata, Brucella microti, Brucella neotomae, Brucella ovis, and Brucella pinnipedialis) with several additional new species under considerat… Show more

“…requires an adequate cell-mediated immune response (Skendros & Boura 2013). Brucella is also known to cause latent infections in which the bacteria persist within phagocytic cells in a dormant state and at a later time replicate and cause clinically significant recrudescent disease (Olsen & Palmer 2014). People with chronic or re-lapsing brucellosis have been shown to have a reduced Th-1 immune response (Skendros & Boura 2013).…”

“…Hepatomegaly and splenomegaly are reported in 23% and 26% patients, respectively [9]. Lifethreatening focal complications are endocarditis and neurobrucellosis but the overall case fatality is less than 1% [10,11]. Severe complications of brucellosis infection are not rare, with 1 case of endocarditis and 4 neurological cases per 100 patients as reported by Dean et al [9].…”

“…Vaccines are available for cattle and sheep and goat whereas no vaccines are available for human beings. The vaccines for cattle include B. abortus S19 and RB51 and for sheep and goat B. melitensis Rev1 strain (Olsen and Palmer, 2014). The vaccines used are live vaccines and risk exists for human beings while handling them at production levels and at vaccination points since these vaccine strains can cause infection in human beings.…”
