Diseases including dengue, chikungunya, malaria, encephalitis, yellow fever, and many more are transmitted by mosquitoes, which are an important vector on a worldwide scale. Because there is now no effective medicine or vaccine, vector management has become the primary strategy for controlling mosquito-borne illnesses. The exponential growth of mosquito populations is a major health concern for many nations due to the transmission of diseases such as dengue fever, lyme disease, malaria, chikungunya, yellow fever, dengue, encephalitis, dengue fever, and epidemic polyarthritis. Mosquitoes can be controlled with a variety of insect repellents, including synthetic chemicals, aromatic oils, and botanicals. In comparison to their plant-based counterparts, chemical mosquito repellents are toxic, but they offer an exceptional protective profile.

Objectives: The present study was conducted to determine antimicrobial, antiradical, and insecticidal activity of methanolic extract of the whole plant of Solanum virginianum L. (Solanaceae).Methods: Extraction of shade dried and powdered plant material was carried out by maceration process. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of extract were determined by agar well diffusion and poisoned food technique, respectively. Antiradical activity of extract was assessed by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azinobis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline 6-sulfonate (ABTS) free radical scavenging assays. Insecticidal activity, in terms of larvicidal activity, was evaluated against 2 nd and 3 rd instar larvae of Aedes aegypti. Results:The extract exhibited inhibitory activity against all bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria showed greater susceptibility to extract when compared to Gram-negative bacteria. The extract was effective in inhibiting the mycelial growth of all test fungi with marked activity against Curvularia sp. and Alternaria sp. The extract scavenged DPPH and ABTS radicals dose dependently with an inhibitory concentration value of 45.66 and 7.37µg/ml, respectively. The extract showed concentration-dependent larvicidal activity with high lethal activity observed against 2 nd instar larvae with lethal concentration value of 0.82 mg/ml. Conclusion:In suitable form, the plant can be used as an effective agent against microbial infections and oxidative damage and to control insect vectors which transmit several diseases.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito control is essential in preventing mosquito-borne diseases. Natural substances originated from plants possessed the great potential of insecticidal properties, the resistance occurs at a slower rate compared to the synthetics, with less toxicity to other living creatures. AIM: This study aimed to identify the fraction of ketapang leaf (Terminalia catappa L) with larvicidal activity on Aedes aegypti instar III larvae, the concentration of ketapang active leaf fraction comparable to temephos, and Lethal Concentration 50 (LC50). METHODS: This study was experimental in vitro. The experiment was performed with five different concentrations of ketapang leaf water-ethanol fraction, i.e. 1200 ppm, 1400 ppm, 1600 ppm, 1800 ppm, 2000 ppm. Observation of morphological damage of mosquito larvae was conducted with the microscope and ImageJ application. Data analysis was performed using One Way ANOVA. LC50 was determined with probit analysis. RESULTS: Phytochemical screening revealed a water-ethanol fraction of ketapang leaf contained tannin, saponin, and flavonoid compounds. The water-ethanol fraction with 1800 ppm concentration possessed significant larvicidal effect comparable to temephos. Probit test revealed an LC50 value of 1563.082 μg/ml. CONCLUSION: Water-ethanol fraction of ketapang leaf possessed high biolarvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti larvae instar III comparable to temephos.
