Adoption and economic impact of improved wheat varieties in the developing world

Abstract: During the past century wheat breeders have produced a large number of genetically improved wheat lines and varieties. This activity has led to widespread adoption of improved varieties, a steady increase in average wheat yields during the past 4–5 decades and major contributions to food security and poverty reduction. The rate of generation and adoption of improved varieties, and therefore the time lag from varietal release to widespread use, varies across regions. The remarkable success of wheat improvement … Show more

“…Many technology adoption studies emerging in crop sub-sector revealed that the gain from adoption is not satisfactory compared to the expectations, and hence further interventions on factors impeding these are suggested (Kotu et al, 2000;Dixon et al, 2006;Dercon and Christiaensen, 2011;Asfaw et al, 2012;Shiferaw et al, 2014;Ahmed, 2015;Jaleta et al, 2016;Yigezu et al, 2015;Beshir, 2016;Hagos, 2016;Seymour et al, 2016).…”

“…Some research demonstrated no investment bias toward favoured areas (Byerlee and Morris 1993) while other research identified a bias that was justifiable on both income and equity grounds (Renkow 1993). Dixon et al (2006) pointed out that while the largest share of benefits derived from wheat breeding from 1960 to 1990 accrued to farmers in irrigated areas, roughly one half of the world's population that is living in poverty is located in the irrigated areas of South Asia.…”

“…However, some estimates suggest that growth rates in yield have been faster over some periods in drier or more heat-stressed environments than in irrigated and rain-fed production systems (Dixon et al 2006;Heisey et al 2002). Lantican et al (2003) concluded that initial gains came from crossover of varieties from favourable environments, but targeted breeding efforts contributed significantly to more recent productivity growth in marginal environments, estimated to be twice that experienced in favourable environments from 1979.…”

“…Since the beginning of the international program in the 1960s, over 2000 new wheat varieties have been released in the developing world with an increasing trend over time (Dixon et al 2006). A growing share of these varieties has been derived from crosses made at CIMMYT and selected by collaborators.…”
