Adjuvant stereotactic permanent seed breast implant: A boost series in view of partial breast irradiation

Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study was to use permanent seed implants in the breast and describe our experience with 15 cases, using iodine seed implants as a tumor bed boost. Methods and Materials: Breasts were fixed with a thermoplastic sheet, a template bridge applied, the thorax scanned and the images rotated to be perpendicular to the implant axis. Skin, heart, and lung were delineated.

“…The use of oxidized avidin may offer a number of potential advantages also compared with current brachytherapy devices like permanent radioactive seeds (53,54), catheters (55,56), balloons (57,58), or other modified avidins. For instance, the perfusion of a target tissue with OXavidin HABA could allow the delay by several days of the administration of biotinylated therapeutics whenever the patient conditions or the logistics might recommend it or fractionation of the therapeutic dose with no need to immobilize the treated tissue, as for example, in current seeds brachytherapy to prevent migration of the seeds.…”

“…It can be used for targeted radionuclide therapy (coupled to a suitable bioconjugate) or for brachytherapy applications, where sources ("seeds") are inserted into a cancer (e.g. breast cancer [48,49]) for localized irradiation. However, the target 102 Pd for production by neutron capture is rare and expensive.…”

“…A novel low-dose-rate breast brachytherapy technique, permanent breast seed implants (PBSIs), has been introduced as a boost treatment by Jansen et al (9) and as APBI by Pignol et al in Toronto (10e12). The Toronto technique uses template and ultrasound (US) guidance to permanently implant stranded radioactive palladium-103 seeds (TheraSeed 200; Breast Microseed, Seattle, WA) into the breast under sedation or anesthesia in a single 1e2 h outpatient session (10).…”
