Adiposity reduces the risk of osteoporosis in Chinese rural population: the Henan rural cohort study

Abstract: Background: Adiposity plays a crucial role in the risk of osteoporosis. However, the impact of body fat distribution on the skeleton is contentious. The study was designed to explore the association of various adiposity indices with estimated bone mineral density (BMD) and the risk of osteoporosis based on body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR), waist to height ratio (WHtR), and visceral fat index (VFI). Methods: A total of 8475 subjects derived fro… Show more

“…The results of this study are similar to those of previous studies [ 13 , 19 , 20 ], showing that skeletal muscle mass (SMI and PMI) can predict osteoporosis to some extent. However, contrary to previous studies [ 5 , 14 ], VFI, SFI, and VSR measured on abdominal CT images at the L3 level were not effective predictors of osteoporosis in the present study. In addition, compared with SMI, PMI is closely correlated with BMD in the femoral neck and lumbar spine, and PMI has a more substantial predictive power.…”

“…Previous studies [ 14 , 19 ] have shown a strong link between adipose tissue and osteoporosis. Therefore, VFI, SFI, and VSR indexes reflecting fat were also included in this study.…”

“…A Chinese cross-sectional study and another small study found that WHR was inversely related to bone mass [ 20 , 27 ]. However, the results from another Chinese cohort study supported the protective effect of WHR on BMD [ 28 ].…”

“…This association was independent of others MetS constitutive elements. Different studies analysed the associations between some adiposity indices, including waist circumference, and BMD or osteoporosis [ 31 35 ]. These studies were preferentially performed in women and furnish contradictory findings, probably for the different inclusion criteria of covariates used in the statistical models used for evaluate the possible association.…”
