Addressing the Challenges of Situationally-Induced Impairments and Disabilities in Mobile Interaction

Abstract: Situationally-induced impairments and disabilities (SIIDs) make it difficult for users of interactive computing systems to perform tasks due to context (e.g., listening to a phone call when in a noisy crowd) rather than a result of a congenital or acquired impairment (e.g., hearing damage). SIIDs are a great concern when considering the ubiquitousness of technology in a wide range of contexts. Considering our daily reliance on technology, and mobile technology in particular, it is increasingly important that w… Show more

“…A large part of the HCI research focusing on understanding how people access and use mobile phones in their daily lives has been mainly carried out in high-resourced settings [9,21,57,70]. However, in recent years, a growing body of evidence has started to examine the unique social and infrastructural dynamics that shape the use of mobile phones in low resourced settings [4,32,54,58].…”

“…We focused on understanding challenges faced by visually impaired people due to emoji. Some of these challenges may also apply to users with typical vision as a result of situationallyinduced impairments and disabilities (SIIDs) [66]. For example, SIIDs caused by screen glare or low screen brightness may result in challenges with selecting emoji, due to their small dimensions.…”

“…Homes are living spaces and it is important to consider that our home environments constantly change throughout the day [11]. Situational impairments [49] are a relevant issue that users will face with HSI. In particular, our participants raised concerns about ambient lighting making a projected surface difficult to use during HSI.…”
