Additivity of Apparent and True Ileal Amino Acid Digestibilities in Soybean Meal, Sunflower Meal, and Meat and Bone Meal for Broilers

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to determine the additivity of apparent and true ileal amino acid digestibility values in soybean meal (SBM), sunflower meal (SFM), and meat and bone meal (MBM). A total of 63 individually caged 5-wk-old broilers were assigned to seven groups and given semi-purified diets containing SBM, SFM, MBM, and their combinations. True digestibilities were estimated by using the homoarginine in guanidinated proteins as the marker. Additivity was tested by comparing the differences between the… Show more

“…Ileal digesta samples from two chicks in each replicate were collected, pooled together and stored at À20 C. AIA in feed and digesta samples were analysed according to Angkanaporn et al (1996). The coefficient of apparent ileal digestibility (CAID) of the nutrients was then calculated from the equation:…”

“…42 days) to week-old chicks or laying hens. A number of studies have examined this factor using broilers of different ages, laying hens and roosters fed different cereals and protein meals (Wallis & Balnave, 1984;Rostagno et al, 1995;Batal & Parsons, 2002;Huang et al, 2005Huang et al, , 2006Huang et al, , 2007Garcia et al, 2007). In general, the digestibility coefficients of amino acids increased with age and varied with feedstuff.…”

“…A recent survey of commodity prices by the University of Missouri (Table 3) revealed a direct correlation between protein content of feedstuffs and their corresponding prices. There are many personal observations that soybean meal is in fact beneficial as a good source of amino acids (Green et al, 1987;Angkanaporn et al, 1996) given correct processing procedures. Previous reports have shown that soybean composition and processing conditions affect the nutritional quality of soybean meal (Grieshop and Fahey, 2001).…”
