As the usage of cellular phones increases wireless subscribers demand many advanced networking capabilities, especially multimedia applications with very high Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The limited availability of radio spectrum enforces Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to have efficient resource management strategies. The goal is to offer services that satisfy the QoS requirements of individual users while achieving an efficient utilization of network resources. This paper considers a resource allocation strategy for cellular networks to be applied during call initiation, handoff and allocation of mobile base stations. Long-term customer retention becomes a major challenge for MNOs due to severe competition in the telecommunications industry. Therefore the MNOs need to understand the customer demographics as well as the customer spending behavior in telecommunications market. Our proposed model combines the information about the customer demographics and usage behavior once the call is initiated. Our hypothesis is that using customer information together with call information yields an efficient customer-oriented resource management strategy. We have performed simulations with different real-life scenarios. Our results show that our proposed model performs better in terms of revenue increase when compared to the First-Come First-Serve based approach.

Abstract-Apart from mobile cellular networks, IEEE 802.11-based wireless local area networks (WLANs) represent the most widely deployed wireless networking technology. With the migration of critical applications onto data networks, and the emergence of multimedia applications such as digital audio/video and multimedia games, the success of IEEE 802.11 depends critically on its ability to provide quality of service (QoS). A lot of research has focused on equipping IEEE 802.11 WLANs with features to support QoS. In this survey, we provide an overview of these techniques. We discuss the QoS features incorporated by the IEEE 802.11 standard at both physical (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layers, as well as other higher-layer proposals. We also focus on how the new architectural developments of softwaredefined networking (SDN) and cloud networking can be used to facilitate QoS provisioning in IEEE 802.11-based networks. We conclude this paper by identifying some open research issues for future consideration.

In QoS provisioning adaptation defines an area of overlap between QoS management and autonomic computing. This convergence is highlighted by the adherence of QoS systems to fundamental principles such as transparency, and the ability of QoS mechanisms to adapt seamlessly to prevailing environmental conditions. This characteristic is also underpinned by a combination of monitoring and management mechanisms, features that are inherent to autonomic behaviour. This paper is concerned with an investigation into the autonomic behaviour of QoS management systems. Relevant QoS mechanisms are identified and their functionality mapped onto autonomic behaviour. In a wider context, the components of a specific QoS architecture, ITSUMO, are considered from the perspective of autonomic control. Furthermore, as part of an ongoing research project, an evaluation mechanism is presented as a fundamental component in the architectural support for autonomic behaviour.
