QoS in IEEE 802.11-based wireless networks: A contemporary review

Abstract: Abstract-Apart from mobile cellular networks, IEEE 802.11-based wireless local area networks (WLANs) represent the most widely deployed wireless networking technology. With the migration of critical applications onto data networks, and the emergence of multimedia applications such as digital audio/video and multimedia games, the success of IEEE 802.11 depends critically on its ability to provide quality of service (QoS). A lot of research has focused on equipping IEEE 802.11 WLANs with features to support QoS.… Show more

“…In general, interactive applications, such as web browsing, video conferencing and live streaming are delay and jitter sensitive. On the contrary, Email, file sharing and remote login are not affected by jitters in the network traffic 16 . In addition, routine operations usually performed by firms such as bulk file transfer are concerned more with average packet loss rate.…”

“…SFC concepts based on SDN can be applied in LTE environment to enforce the packets among a logical network graph and achieve certain service functionality among the virtualised components such as BSS, HSS, RAN etc [23]. The role of the controller in this holistic approach has been analysed in the literature and some experimental and industry implementations already have been presented [24][25][26][27][28]. However SFC solution based on SDN in this scenario is an unexplored area and potentially one of the use cases to be addressed.…”

“…The ACO for routing protocol has been implemented in the WSN [13]. The QoS requirements in wireless networks have been discussed in [14]. The Cluster based approach to Adhoc On Demand Distance Vector (CAODV) has increased the life time and QoS of the WSN [15].…”
