Adaptive digital distance relay for SSSC‐based double‐circuit transmission line using phasor measurement unit

Abstract: Summary The existence of midpoint series flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices leads to degrade the performance of mho relay, leading in erroneous estimation of fault location, ie, overreach or underreach for wide variation in network parameters. This research article proposes a novel mho relay algorithm to improve the performance of distance relay in presence of FACTS device using phasor measurement unit (PMU). First, the complete model of transmission system employing static synchr… Show more

“…The apparent impedances are then calculated by distance relays. An adaptive distance relay is proposed for protecting lines with series compensators in References 29–32. Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static var compensator (SVC) affect the impedances measured by distance relays, so they can lead to over‐reach or under‐reach 33‐38 .…”

“…is adaptive relying method used the synchronized measurement and effectively identified all faults located on a 300 km transmission line with an accuracy of 0.6%. In [15], the authors proposed a Mho relay algorithm for improving the performance of distance relay installed on transmission line equipped with a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC). is is achieved using a phasor measurement unit (PMU).…”

“…Arvind et al presented an adaptive distance protection scheme using the information of shunt injected current by STATCOM connected at midpoint of the transmission line. Global Positioning System (GPS) with fibre optic was used for communicating between the local relay and STATCOM, thereby reducing the time lag for data communication, while Dhenuvakonda et al used phasor measurement unit (PMU) algorithm with static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) connected at the midpoint to analyse its effect on a double circuit transmission line protection scheme.…”
