Introduction: Prison officers undergo a high amount of work-stress and consequently suffer from burnout, which is detrimental to their health, the organization and the inmates. There are no studies conducted on burnout of prison officers in Sri Lanka, partly due to the non-availability of a validated scale. Objectives: To validate the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) for assessing burnout among prison officers working in Sri Lankan prisons Methods: A cross-sectional validation study was carried out among a representative sample of 267 correctional and rehabilitation officers working in the Colombo Remand Prison and Colombo New Magazine Prison, selected through probability-proportionate-to-sample size and random sampling methods. The Sinhala-translated MBI-HSS was judgmentally validated and pre-tested prior to administration. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed using LISREL 9.3 software to assess the construct validity of MBI-HSS. The presence of job-related neurasthenia in participants, diagnosed by a psychiatrist was taken as the gold standard to assess the criterion validity. Internal consistency and test-retest methods were used to assess the reliability. Results: A three-factor model with items 6, 13, 16 and 22 of the instrument deleted, was identified as the model best fitting the data during CFA, achieving the best goodness of fit parameters (RMSEA=0.0748;  2 =185.2, p=0.001;  2 /df=1.4; CFI=0.974; NNFI=0.97; GFI=0.985; SRMR=0.056). Clinical burnout was seen in 32.6% of the sample. According to the cutoff values achieved through receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves for burnout and its three sub-scales of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment, the sensitivity and specificity were 94.3% & 87.8%; 82.8% & 80.6%; 72.4% & 73.9%; and 77% & 77.2%, respectively. The reliability of the tool was satisfactory. Conclusions: Translated and validated MBI-HSS was found to be a valid and reliable tool for assessing burnout among Sri Lankan prison officers. Using it during their medical examinations is recommended.

This paper proposes a new method to evaluate informative hypotheses for meta-analysis of Cronbach's coefficient alpha using a Bayesian approach. The coefficient alpha is one of the most widely used reliability indices. In meta-analyses of reliability, researchers typically form specific informative hypotheses beforehand, such as 'alpha of this test is greater than 0.8' or 'alpha of one form of a test is greater than the others.' The proposed method enables direct evaluation of these informative hypotheses. To this end, a Bayes factor is calculated to evaluate the informative hypothesis against its complement. It allows researchers to summarize the evidence provided by previous studies in favor of their informative hypothesis. The proposed approach can be seen as a natural extension of the Bayesian meta-analysis of coefficient alpha recently proposed in this journal (Brannick and Zhang, 2013). The proposed method is illustrated through two meta-analyses of real data that evaluate different kinds of informative hypotheses on superpopulation: one is that alpha of a particular test is above the criterion value, and the other is that alphas among different test versions have ordered relationships. Informative hypotheses are supported from the data in both cases, suggesting that the proposed approach is promising for application.

Burnout Syndrome is one of the most vulnerable psychological problems occurring in nurses in hospitals. The incidence of burnout syndrom in nurses, if it is allowed to be untreated specifically, it will affect on work productivity, physical and psychological disorders. Therefore, it is important to identify nurses who are at risk in developing the burnout syndrome. To identify this, a valid and reliable instrument is needed so that the data obtained is accurate. The aim of this study literature was to identify the value of the validity and reliability of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey (MBI-HSS) instrument in several countries in measuring burnout syndrome of nurse. The databases used in this literature study were PubMED, Science Direct and Google Schoolar. There were 21 articles identified and published from 2010-2017. Of the 21 articles, 5 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that the value of validity and reliability were good enough, from the results of the validity test, the three-factor analysis was considered the best analysis among the other factor analyzes that produced acceptable model fit values and items that had a validity value below the standard were 20 items (deleted items12 and 16), Lebanon 20 items (deleted items 13 and 22), Sri Lanka 21 items (deleted item 4), South Africa 20 items (deleted items 4 and 6), and France 17 items (deleted 12,16,6,22,13) while the reliability of the MBI-HSS instrument in some countries shows the reliable value with cronbach alpha > 0.70. In conclusion the value of validity and reliability of the instrument shows the accuracy in collecting data. With the value of validity and reliability of the MBI-HSS instrument, it is expected to help practitioners and other researchers in identifying the accuracy of the MBI-HSS instrument in measuring the burnout syndrome of nurses.
