Acylcarnitine profile in Alaskan sled dogs during submaximal multiday exercise points out metabolic flexibility and liver role in energy metabolism

Abstract: Alaskan sled dogs develop a particular metabolic strategy during multiday submaximal exercise, allowing them to switch from intra-muscular to extra-muscular energy substrates thus postponing fatigue. Specifically, a progressively increasing stimulus for hepatic glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis provides glucose for both fueling exercise and replenishing the depleted muscle glycogen. Moreover, recent studies have shown that with continuation of exercise sled dogs increase their insulin-sensitivity and their ca… Show more

“…Instead, the serum concentration of total mediumchain acylcarnitines decreased in the aforementioned kittens with choline treatment. As C2 is derived from acetyl-CoA, increased concentrations of C2 may be indicative of increased production of acetyl-CoA from β-oxidation that exceeds the capacity of the Kreb's cycle [82][83][84]. Additionally, C2 together with C0 (free carnitine) is one of the main circulating forms of Lcarnitine.…”

“…Alaskan sled dogs (ASD), also known as Alaskan Huskies, were originally bred as working dogs for hauling cargo-laden sleds over snow-covered arctic terrain [ 1 ]. Over the years, they have evolved as highly aerobic mammals and elite endurance athletes through selective breeding with pure-bred dogs and are used in modern sled dog racing [ 2 , 3 ]. Genetic disorders such as congenital laryngeal paralysis (CLP), which causes respiratory distress, have a debilitating effect on the performance and survival of such elite runners.…”
