“…The composition of these drugs included PHMGhl, diethylphthalate, and ethyl alcohol (92%). The most typical manifestation of acute poisoning was cholestatic hepatitis (Ivashkin, Buyeverov, 2007;Ostapenko et al, 2011). The development of toxic hepatitis was accompanied by significant disturbances in the metabolism of lipids (Makarov, Ryasenskii, 2009).…”

“…Around 2006, the curves both of male mortality and of fatal alcohol poisonings go smoothly downwards, which is compatible with some literature 5,54 , although in a diagram presented in 22 , the all-cause mortality in 2006 is slightly higher than in preceding and subsequent years. As discussed above, in 2006 there was "a mass wave of severe poisonings" 44,45 . This outbreak, i.e.…”

“…Unrecorded figures were probably higher. Histologically, "cholestatic hepatitis with a severe inflammatory component" was reported 45 . Remarkably, the toxicological assessments of PHMG and a structurally related compound -polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) have not shown any strong hepatotoxicity, whereas PHMG had broader margins of safety than PHMB.…”

“…Another mass poisoning occurred in several places of the Russian Federation in 2006, particularly in Siberia. The number of poisonings with marked jaundice during the period August-November 2006 was reported to have amounted to 12,611, including 1189 lethal cases, reportedly caused by the disinfectant Extrasept-1, containing 0.08-0.15% of diethyl phthalate and 0.1-0.14% of polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) hydrochloride sold in vodka bottles (Luzhnikov, 2014; Ostapenko et al ., 2011). Actual figures are unknown.…”
