The chemical profile of Teucrium polium L. (T. polium) methanolic extract was tested using liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HR-LCMS). Disc diffusion and microdilution assays were used for the antimicrobial activities. Coxsackievirus B-3 (CVB3) and Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) were used for the antiviral activities. Chromobacterium violaceum (ATCC 12472 and CV026) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 were used as starter strains for the anti-quorum sensing tests. Isoprenoids are the main class of compounds identified, and 13R-hydroxy-9E,11Z-octadecadienoic acid, valtratum, rhoifolin, sericetin diacetate, and dihydrosamidin were the dominant phytoconstituents. The highest mean diameter of growth inhibition zone was recorded for Acinetobacter baumannii (19.33 ± 1.15 mm). The minimal inhibitory concentrations were ranging from 6.25 to 25 mg/mL for bacterial strains, and from 6.25 to 25 mg/mL for Candida species. The 50% cytotoxic concentration on VERO (African Green Monkey Kidney) cell lines was estimated at 209 µg/mL. No antiviral activity was recorded. Additionally, T. polium extract was able to inhibit P. aeruginosa PAO1 motility in a concentration-dependent manner. However, the tested extract was able to inhibit 23.66% of the swarming and 35.25% of swimming capacities of PAO1 at 100 µg/mL. These results highlighted the role of germander as a potent antimicrobial agent that can interfere with the virulence factors controlled by the quorum-sensing systems.

The mycotoxin altertoxin I (ATX-I) is one of secondary metabolites produced by Alternaria fungi and is frequently detected as food and feed contaminants. Little is known about the genotoxicity of the ATX-I. In order to evaluate potential genotoxicity and general toxicity of ATX-I, the novel 28-day multiendpoint (Pig-a assay + micronucleus [MN] test + comet assay) genotoxicity platform was applied. Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomized to five groups (six rats per group), that is, a positive control group (N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea [ENU], 40 mg/kg.bw/d), two solvent control groups (PBS and corn oil), and two ATX-I-treated groups (low-dose group [1.10 μg/kg.bw/d] and high-dose group [5.51 μg/kg.bw/d]). Treatments were administered by oral gavage to male SD rats for 28 consecutive days. Histopathological damages in the liver, kidney, and spleen were observed, but without significant changes in hematological and serum biochemical parameters. Genotoxic endpoints indicated that ATX-I could cause DNA damage. To summarize, in a relatively lowdose range, ATX-I may not have direct genotoxicity in vivo but could induce liver, kidney, and spleen damage.

The use of medicinal plants for the prevention and treatment of several diseases, particularly diabetes, remains the remedy and the sustainable source for many diseases. This survey was conducted out in Bejaia province in the center of Algeria to invent the main plants used in folk medicine to treat diabetes mellitus, their availability in this region, and the mode of their use. This study was carried out in 2019 in several municipalities of the study area. Ethnobotanical information was obtained using a questionnaire through direct interviews with 323 people with diabetes. Among people with diabetes interviewed, 82% present type 2 diabetes, from which more than 60% of them use medicinal plants against 36.84% only in type 1 diabetics. Diabetes affected age groups differently; the age range most affected was 61-80 years (43.96%). A total of 43 plant species belonging to 25 families were identified and listed in this study. The most frequent species used by patients are Artemisia herba-alba (34.42%), Olea europaea (13.66%), and Ajuga iva (11.47%). The part of the plant used depends on the plant; the aerial part was the more used (40.9%), followed by leaves (25%) and fruits (13.63%). The other parts, such as seed, root, flower, bark, bulb, epicarp, and rhizome, were used with low frequencies. It was also interesting to indicate that decoction and infusion were the systematic preparation methods compared to others (maceration, cooking with food, and fresh). The present study clearly showed that phytotherapy is widely adopted by center Algerian society, and there is a huge diversity of medicinal plants used for the complementary treatment of diabetes. Moreover, this investigation provides researchers with important information that can be exploited to develop anti-diabetic remedies.
