This study evaluated the dietary supplementation with essential oil of Lippia alba on the hemato-immunological parameters of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) submitted to acute inflammation induced by carrageenin injection in the swim bladder. For a period of 45 days, 96 fish were divided into four treatments in triplicate, as follows: (a) fish fed supplemented diet with essential oil of L. alba (4 mL kg -1 dry ration) injected with carrageenin; (b) fish fed supplemented diet with cereal alcohol injected with carrageenin; (c) fish fed unsupplemented diet with essential oil injected with carrageenin; (d) fish fed unsupplemented diet and noninjected. Cortisol levels, erythrogram, leukogram and the inflammatory infiltrate were analyzed 6 hours after an inflammatory stimulus. Carrageenin-injected fish showed an acute inflammatory reaction in the swim bladder characterized by higher infiltrate of neutrophils and monocytes. The circulating neutrophils number was significantly higher in fish fed L. alba when compared to other treatments. No difference in cortisol levels was found. For the dose, time and administration form tested, supplementation with essential oil of L. alba did not present anti-inflammatory activity. On the other hand, an influence of dietary supplementation was observed on the neutrophils number after induced aerocystitis highlighting its immunomodulatory characteristic. ResumoEste estudo avaliou a suplementação dietária com óleo essencial de Lippia alba sobre os parâmetros hematoimunológicos em tilápias do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) submetidas à inflamação aguda induzida por carragenina na bexiga natatória. Pelo período de 45 dias, 96 peixes foram divididos em quatro tratamentos em triplicata: (a) peixes suplementados com óleo essencial de L. alba (4 mL kg -1 de ração seca) injetados com carragenina; (b) peixes suplementados com álcool de cereais injetados com carragenina; (c) peixes não suplementados com óleo essencial injetados com carragenina; (d) peixes não suplementados e não injetados. Os níveis de cortisol, o eritrograma, o leucograma e o infiltrado inflamatório foram analisados seis horas após o estímulo inflamatório. Peixes injetados com carragenina apresentaram reação inflamatória aguda na bexiga natatória caracterizada pela maior concentração de infiltrado de neutrófilos e monócitos. O número de neutrófilos circulantes foi significativamente maior nos peixes suplementados com L. alba, numa comparação com os outros tratamentos. Não houve diferença nos níveis de cortisol. Para a dose, o tempo e a forma de administração testada, a suplementação com óleo essencial de L. alba não apresentou atividade anti-inflamatória. Por outro lado, foi constatada influência da suplementação dietária no número de neutrófilos após a aerocistite, enfatizando a sua característica imunomoduladora. The parenteral use of amino acids and vitamins has been used to improve performance in animal production. However, few studies demonstrating the toxicity of these compounds. The present investigation evaluated the toxicological and clinical safety of the injectable supplement compound by amino acids and vitamins, administered by intramuscular route in Wistar rats. 56 females (± 220g), pubescent virgins, were randomly divided into seven groups (n=8): Treated with dose of 0.2, 2 and 4 mL, sampled 24 and 96 hours post-treatment (HPT), totaling six groups and one control group (Physiology Standard). Signifi cant increase in the enzymatic activity of serum ALT, AST, LDH and ALP was observed in animals treated with 2 and 4 mL (24 HPT). However, these changes returned to baseline levels 96 HPT, except in serum AST and ALP in animals treated with 4 mL. CK-NAC showed dose-response effect, since the higher compound dose was followed by proportional increase in the circulating levels of this enzyme, associated to muscle degeneration and necrosis area in rats treat with 4mL at 96 HPT. The evaluation of hepatic function did not result in signifi cant changes in the serum levels of triglycerides, cholesterol, albumin, urea and creatinine in the comparison between rats treated with 0.2 mL and control rats, demonstrating the innocuousness of this treatment on the activity of liver and kidney. However, deleterious effects were observed in animals subjected to doses of 2 and 4 mL, including observed increased splenic and hepatosomatic response, signifi cant decrease in circulating albumin levels and signifi cant leukocytosis, which is characterized by neutrophilia, followed by lymphopenia demonstrating the compound irritating effect on muscle tissue.

Estreptococos beta-hemolítico en tilapias del Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) cultivadas en Sullana, Piura - Perú

Objective. This investigation aimed to study the presence of Streptococcus spp. in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from fish farm located in Sullana-Piura, Peru. Materials and methods. 150 fish with clinical signs of streptococcal disease were sampled, and the bacterium isolation was performed on blood agar, correlated to histopathological lesions description and molecular confirmation by real-time PCR. Results. The necropsy revealed exophthalmia, hyphema, congestion and/or haemorrhagic meninges, ascites, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and diffuse haemorrhagic zones throughout the body. 102 isolated positives (54 tilapias) to Streptococcus spp. were identified in the microbiological analysis (prevalence of 26%), the brain was the organ with the highest percentage of this bacteria (34.31%), and 19 isolates were beta-haemolytic (18.63%) with prevalence of 10.12%. Fish beta-haemolytic streptococci presented epicarditis, perisplenitis and chronic meningitis, panophthalmitis, coagulative necrosis of skeletal muscle and granulomas formation. In the confirmatory test by real-time PCR, any positive tilapia to S. iniae was obtained. The results were analysed using a stochastic simulation of beta distribution using @Risk program uncertainty, reporting an average prevalence of 0.66% in sick tilapias. Conclusions. The analysed fishes were positive to bacteria of the genus Streptococcus, which confirms its presence in the fish farm. However, 19 isolates were beta-haemolytic, and the presence of S. iniae was not positive to the limit prevalence of 2.7% in real-time PCR.Keywords: Cichlids, histopathology, microbiology, PCR, teleost fish (Source: DeCS, CAB, MeSH). Materiales y Métodos. 150 peces con signos clínicos de la enfermedad estreptocócica fueron analizados, el aislamiento bacteriano se realizó en agar sangre, en correlación con las lesiones histopatológicas y diagnóstico molecular mediante PCR en tiempo real. Resultados. A la necropsia se observó exoftalmia, hifema, congestión y/o meninges hemorrágicas, ascitis, esplenomegalia, hepatomegalia y zonas hemorrágicas difusas en todo el cuerpo. 102 aislados positivos (54) tilapias para Streptococcus spp. fueron identificados en el análisis microbiológico (prevalencia del 26%), el cerebro fue el órgano con el más alto porcentaje del género de esta bacteria (34.31%), 19 aislados fueron beta-hemolítico (18.63%), con prevalencia de 10.12%.
