Actinomycete-flora associated with submersed freshwater macrophytes

Abstract: Aquatic vegetation from three stream sites located within the US Department of Energy's Savannah River Site, South Carolina was sampled to determine the presence, distribution and diversity of actinomycetes on submersed macrophytes. At individual sampling sites, small pieces of submersed aquatic plants (Sparganium americanum, Ranunculus pusillus and Microanthemum umbrosum) were clipped and placed in sterile sampling containers. In the laboratory, plant fragments were subjected to a wide array of selective meas… Show more

“…In the analyses of benthic actinomycetes in freshwater lake sediments of the Sunshine Coast, micromonosporae were detected at a maximum concentration of 2.0 x 10 3 .g −1 of dried sediment. These findings also support the results of other researchers who reported correlations between the numbers of actinomycetes and organic matter content of that aquatic habitat [10, 14, 68]. …”

“…coelicolor (Xiao et al 2005). While chitin agar allows the isolation of common actinobacterial genera, pretreatments of the environmental samples or enrichment procedures prior to selection on chitin agar have, however, been proposed to promote isolation of rare actinobacteria (Subramani and Aalbersberg 2013; Wohl and McArthur 1998). Chitin has also been used as selective substrate in a resuscitation procedure of bacteria trapped in Antarctic permafrost (Manucharova et al 2016).…”

“…It has recently become evident that actinomycete diversity is much wider than first believed (Bredholdt et al 2007), with actinomycetes being found in the marine environment (Fenical and Jensen 2006), in association with aquatic macrophytes (Wohl and McArthur 1998), in hypogean layers (Carlsohn et al 2007), and in diverse soil environments, such as the tropical rainforest (Wang et al 1999), acidic (Zakalyukina et al 2002) and alkaline soils (Selyanin et al 2005), or sand dunes (Kurtböke et al 2007).
