Background In 2017, the World Health Organization declared the snakebite envenomation as a neglected tropical disease. Annually, snakebite envenomation causes approximately 400,000 permanent disabilities and 95,000 deaths worldwide. People with the greatest risk of envenomation lack access to adequate health care, including treatment with antivenom. We developed na analysis of accessibility to antivenom in Brazil in order to verify the impacts on mortality. Methods and Findings Information about number of accidents, deaths, antivenom, medical assistance, and species, were retrieved from the Brazilian Health Informatics Department (DATASUS) from 2010 to 2015 and analyzed using geostatistics to evaluate the association between snakebite acidentes and mortality. An Spatial analysis using Global Morans I was performed in order to verify the presence of spatiality as an independent variable to the distribution of the accidents. In addition, we also tested three different analysis of regression using Ordinary Least Square (OLS), Spatial Error, and Geographically Weighed Regression (GWR), together with the information obtained from the DATASUS and sociodemographic indicators, to verify the spatial-temporal distribution of envenomation cases and time to reach the healthcare centers. The regression presenting the lowest Akaike Criterion Information (AIC), highest adjusted R2, and variables with p < 0.05 was selected to represent our model. Lastly, the accessibility index was performed using 2-step floating catchment area based on the amount of hospital beds and inhabitants. This study revealed 141,039 cases of snakebites, 598 deaths, and mortality rate of 3.13 per 1,000,000 inhabitants. Moreover, GWR presented the best fit (AIC = 55477.56; adjusted R2 = 0.55) and showed that illiteracy, income, percentage of urban population, percentage of antivenom, accessibility index for hospital beds with antivenom, proportion of cases with more than 3 hours to reach healthcare are correlated with the mortality rate by snakebite (p < 0.05). Conclusion This study identified regions affected by snakebite and how the accessibility to antivenom treatment plays an important role in the mortality in Brazil. Public interventions can located to those most vulnerable regions in order to improve the accident outcome.

In addition, it is relevant to highlight that the improvement of water transport in this region is as much challenging as the road transport because of the natural conditions of the Amazon regions, which entails different sizes of rivers, a complex hydrological cycle (which means that there can be periods of the day or of the year that the volume of rivers may be lower or higher in different parts of the region), geomorphology of the rivers, and other natural conditions that can be barriers for the improvement of water transport [37]. Air Transportation, Economy and Causality: Remote Towns in Brazil’s Amazon Region

There is a vast amount of literature on relations between air transport activities and economic growth. The recognition that these are important relationships has aroused the interest of researchers, who have studied them with regard to remote towns. The empirical studies have concentrated more on developed areas, such as Europe, North America, and Australia. No empirical studies were found for Brazil, which holds most of the Amazon region. In this study, the Granger causality method was used to investigate for causal relationships between regular domestic air passenger transport links and the gross domestic product of small municipalities in this region. The results indicate short- and long-term, two-way causality in which gross domestic product has a stronger impact on air transport than vice versa.

O artigo dedica-se a analisar a importância da navegação fluvial para a integração regional amazônica. Com o desenvolvimento do direito internacional do meio ambiente, a Amazônia, cuja preservação torna-se objeto de interesse da humanidade, em razão de suas riquezas naturais, diversidade cultural e importância ecossistêmica. Como reação ao discurso de internacionalização, os Estados amazônicos subdesenvolvidos, liderados pelo Brasil, adotam o Tratado de Cooperação Amazônia, cujo propósito imediato é reafirmar a soberania territorial e estimular a cooperação entre si. Entretanto, o Tratado vai além, podendo ser identificado como base normativa para a integração regional. Para tanto, destaca-se a navegação fluvial, que, por sua vez, depende de investimentos em infraestrutura. A fim de suprir essa demanda, a Iniciativa para a Integração de Infraestrutura Regional Sul-Americana, vinculada à União das Nações Sul-Americanas, apresenta-se como alternativa multilateral de investimentos nesse setor. Contudo, a modificação no contexto político continental, nos últimos anos, marcado por um exacerbado conservadorismo, tem inviabilizado esta alternativa de integração amazônica.
