Accurate Evaluation of Palpable Breast Masses by the Triple Test Score

Abstract: Background : We previously reported that the triple test (physical examination, mammography, and fine needle aspiration) for palpable breast masses yields 100% diagnostic accuracy when all 3 components are concordant (all benign or all malignant). However, 40% of cases are nonconcordant and require open biopsy. Objective: To evaluate our experience with the triple test to develop a method to further limit the need for surgical biopsy.

“…In the present study 125 patients age ranging from 10 years to 67 years with a median age of 24 years for the benign group and 45.4 ± 9.6 years in the patients with malignant lesion. This finding is similar to some other studies; 49 years 10 and 46 years. 4 Time interval since the patient noted the lump to the time of presentation for consultation reflects the awareness and 'access to health' of the population.…”

“…On the other hand, MG is not useful in women under the age of 40 due to the more dense breast pattern and these patients should be evaluated with ultrasonography. PE may be repeated at 2-4 month intervals if the mass cannot be identified with ultrasonography (US) (4). In addition, MG may be useful for women between the ages 35-40 if US reveals normal or suspicious findings.…”
