Introduction:The estimation of age at the time of death is often an important step in the identification of human remains. If the age can be accurately estimated, it will significantly narrow the field of possible identities that will have to be compared to the remains in order to establish a positive identification. Recent research shows that Secondary dentin deposition, root translucency, and cementum apposition in a combination may be used more reliably than the combination of six factors (attrition, periodontitis, root resorption, secondary dentin deposition, root translucency, and cementum apposition). Materials and Methods: A study sample consisted of 95 patients undergone extraction, extracted teeth were collected and utilized for ground sections, sections were grinded until the thickness of 1-mm, on this thickness root translucency was noted, teeth were further undergone grinding up to 0.25 mm thickness afterward they were viewed under microscope for secondary dentin deposition and cementum apposition. Results: By using the combination of these three factors for age estimation we got a mean error of ±4.51. Discussion: Present study is confirmed that secondary dentin deposition, root translucency, and cementum apposition are more reliable factors or strictly age-related factors and provides many accu rate results.

Öz Amaç: Dental radyografilerin yaş tayininde güvenle kullanılabileceği yapılan çalışmalarla ortaya konmuş olup üç boyutlu görüntüleme yöntemlerinin son yıllardaki gelişimi ile bu alanda pek çok yeni çalışma yapılmıştır. Yapılan çalışmalarda, çenelerin sağ ve sol kadranları arasında belirgin simetri olduğu öne sürülmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı; mandibular premolar dişlerdeki yapısal değişikliklerin konik ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi (KIBT) görüntülerinde farklı radyolojik yaş tayini yöntemleri ile değerlendirilerek sağ ve sol kadranlar arasında farklılık olup olmadığının araştırılmasıdır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Mandibular sağ ve sol 1. ve 2. premolar dişlerin mevcut olduğu yüksek diagnostik kaliteye sahip 50 adet KIBT görüntüsünde; mandibular premolar dişlerin tümünde yapısal değişiklikler görsel olarak (modifiye Gustafson metodu), lineer ölçümlerle (Kvaal yöntemi) ve hacim ölçümleriyle (pulpa/ diş hacim oranı yöntemi) değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler istatistiksel olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Yapılan tüm değerlendirmelerde, premolar dişlerin her biri için oluşturulan regresyon modelleri istatistiksel olarak anlamlı (p<0,001) bulunmuştur. Modifiye Gustafson metodu kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen görsel değerlendirmelerde 45 (R=0,734) ve 44 (R=0,707) no'lu dişlerin, Kvaal yöntemi kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen lineer ölçümlerde 35 (R=0,385) ve 44 (R=0,375) no'lu dişlerin, pulpa/diş hacim oranı yöntemi kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen değerlendirmelerde ise 35 (R=0,461) ve 34 (R=0,420) no'lu dişlerin yaş ile daha yüksek korelasyon gösterdikleri sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Sonuç: Yaş tayini konusunda daha önce yapılan ve sağ-sol kadranlar arasında farklılık olmadığını öne süren çalışmaların aksine, çalışmamızda sağ-sol kadranlar arasında farklılık olduğu tespit edilmiştir. A Comparative Evaluation of Gustafson’s Formula and New Formula for Age Estimation in India – A Forensic Study

The choice to use teeth for age determination is well accepted due to their longevity ability of being resilient to change. The total of 228 extracted teeth collected from the patients visited to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, NIMS Dental College, Jaipur, the teeth were without dental fillings and without and/or cavity selected. The known age was from 21 to 70 years with the average age of 43.46 years. For age estimation the method according to Gustafson was used. Every tooth was subject to longitudinal section of the midpulpal area. The following dental parameters were studied in each case: attrition, periodontal bone loss, root translucency, secondary dentin deposition, cementum apposition and root resorption. Total scores of different parameters plotted against the chronological age and regression formula was obtained. Using this formula ages were estimated, Gustafson formula was also applied in the same scores and ages estimated. The results of the chronological and estimated age by both formulae have been statistically compared using Pearson's correlation and regression analysis. The results showed strong correlation (0.92; p<0.001) between chronological and estimated age by using both formulae. We found the mean error of ±5.47 by using newly derived and formula and ±6.35 by Gustafson's formula. As a result of our study it was found that newly derived formula provides better results in comparison with Gustafson's formula in Indian population. A positive correlation between age and total scores of physiological changes also revealed.
