Accidental Closantel Poisoning in Sheep in the State of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil

Abstract: Background: Verminosis is one of the major health problems in sheep flocks, and is one of the main causes of death in sheep worldwide. Closantel is an antiparasitic drug commonly used in sheep; however, its safety margin is narrow, and this drug may induce intoxication in animals submitted to high doses. Lesions occur mainly in the eyes, and are characterized by edema and compression of the optic nerve, retinopathy, and severe degeneration of ganglia cells. Clinical signs are pupil dilation, which often lead t… Show more

“…The blindness in polioencephalomalacia is of brain origin, so other clinical signs and histopathological lesions are sufficient to differentiate. In closantel poisoning, retinal lesions are present as degeneration and loss of the photoreceptor layer, inner nuclear layer, and atrophy of the outer plexiform layer (Pohl et al 2020), but information about the use of this product helps exclude this. Some infectious diseases can cause blindness, for example, infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, malignant catarrhal fever, and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis.…”

“…2 Frequent symptoms of toxicity are loss of appetite, ataxia, visual and other neurologic manifestations. 3 There are several reports of ophthalmic side effects in livestock overdosed with Closantel. Van Der Lugt et al studied the histopathological changes of the optic nerve and retina in accidental overdosage of sheep and goats.…”

“…Overdosing is a frequent error in small ruminant farms, resulting in poisoning characterized mainly by neurological and respiratory alterations and malformations in fetuses (Lopes et al 2014, Almeida et al 2017. The error in the dose applied to the animals related to the lack of reading of medical leaflets and prescriptions, the overestimation of the animal's weight, defective dosing equipment and the use of dewormers with high doses over an uninterrupted period are considered the main factors related to intoxications (Pohl et al 2020). In addition, high levels of plasma concentration can occur due to the use of drugs composed of aqueous solutions associated with inadequate routes of administration (Salgado & Santos 2016).…”
