Absorbing partner knowledge in R&D collaborations – the influence of founders on potential and realized absorptive capacity

Abstract: We investigate whether founder participation in research and development collaborations enhances the two dimensions of absorptive capacity (ACAP): potential ACAP and realized ACAP. Based on a longitudinal firm-patent dataset of over 700 collaborations, and using a novel measure of ACAP, we find that founder involvement enhances potential ACAP provided the knowledge bases of focal firm and partner are related. Once knowledge has been absorbed, founder involvement increases realized ACAP irrespective of relatedn… Show more

“…The new products introduced in the market by these firms do not result from R&D activity outputs. These findings confirm that a lack of technically qualified competences constitutes one of the most determinant constraints to innovation by small firms, and as was stated and reviewed in works [34,[53][54][55].…”

“…Entrepreneurs' characteristics influence the entrepreneurial behavior significantly (Álvarez-Herranz et al, 2011). Some entrepreneurs engage in companies' inventive activities, which enhances firms' absorptive capacity (Mueller et al, 2020) and spurs firms' survival and growth (Haeussler et al, 2019). These entrepreneurs usually own the dual roles of inventors and founders.…”

“…The first hypothesis (H1) states that PACAP does not affect the ability to innovate (Leal-Rodríguez et al, 2014;Alves et al, 2016;Mueller et al, 2020). This hypothesis is accepted.…”

“…Founders are the idea people in start-ups. Although the founder acts as a knowledge absorber (Mueller, 2020), the level of PACAP is higher only if the partner's knowledge base is close to the founder's knowledge domain. Founders also function as knowledge intermediaries who transfer ideas from places they know to places representing innovative possibilities.…”
