CAN FOUNDERS’DUAL ROLESFACILITATE INNOVATION? – FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF FOUNDERS’ R&D NETWORK CHARACTERISTICS

Abstract: Founders are crucial for the start-ups, which in turn makes it very important to study how founders’ behaviour affects the development of the start-ups. Based on the data of the companies listed on Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) and Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) board from 2014 to 2017 in China, this paper explores the impact of founders’ dual roles of R&D and management on enterprises’ innovation performance from the perspective of founders’ R&D network characteristics. The empirical research re… Show more

“…The goal of the HRMS is to improve the user experience of candidates in the process of finding suitable jobs on the employment platform. Its most basic task is to recommend jobs of interest to candidates so that the recommended jobs have a high degree of matching with the candidates, thereby increasing the probability of candidates successfully obtaining jobs [ 29 , 30 ]. In order to achieve this goal, the system needs to provide channels for candidates to upload and publish their own information.…”

“…Constraints in available resources may limit R&D outputs which, in turn, prevent firms from superior performance. In the same vein, thanks to the promotion effect of founders involvement in R&D inventive, SMEs could receive generous government subsidies to support research activities (Jiang, Wang et al, 2021). However, due to coordination and cooperation costs in inventive activities, such a greater amount of resources may induce more innovation ideas but of mediocre standing (Baumann and Stieglitz, 2014), which, in turn, do not translate into greater levels of innovative outputs.…”

“…Apart from R&D, because of resource poverty and the key role played by founders, in SMEs founders can well hold dual or multiple involvements in functional areas different from R&D (Jiang, Wang et al, 2021). The moderating effect of founders multiple roles on the founders involvement in R&D-R&D resources linkage is here envisaged by considering the impact of different priorities and pressures as well as the limits on the founders contribution to structuring R&D activities.…”

“…Thus, R&D intensity is a measure of innovation (Karbowski, 2019) which set in motion the volatility of R&D expenditure and indicates how much the R&D financial effort of a firm is. Jiang et al (2021) report that highly R&D intensive companies have a weaker reaction of the share price. This negative relationship is explained by the interest of financially constrained firms to disclose more information about R&D activity in order to mitigate outside investors' risk exposure.…”
