Abductive Theory Construction

Abstract: Consumer research is characterized by two types of research contributions: qualitative researchers propose original theory and quantitative researchers test existing theory. We describe a novel research approach that uses quantitative research methods to propose original theory. The method relies on an iterative investigate‐learn‐update research process that generates, but does not test, original theory. The method places a special emphasis on conducting informed exploratory studies that rely on a breadth of d… Show more

“…Although we started our analysis without an a priori theory, we developed constructs and themes by way of an abductive process to understand and theorize on HRI as a non-dyadic phenomenon. Such an analytical strategy is consistent with contemporary qualitative consumer research (Janiszewski and van Osselaer, 2021;Fischer and Guzel, 2022). Both data collection and analysis stopped when theoretical saturation was achieved (Denzin and Lincoln, 2018).…”

“…In the relational engagement tradition (Bublitz et al 2021; Bublitz, Peracchio, et al 2019; Ozanne et al 2017), our nonprofit partners’ participation in this research was collaborative over a period of six to eight months. Our research process was abductive, following the stepwise, iterative approach recommended by Janiszewski and Van Osselaer (2022, p. 17) to “hypothesize, observe, analyze, organize and prioritize” with a goal of developing a conceptual framework. This method followed the process employed in Bublitz et al's (2021) JPP&M article, which Janiszewski and Van Osselaer feature as an exemplar for conducting discovery-oriented abductive research.…”

“…In fact, the problem of scaling social impact has plagued researchers and practitioners as they sought to use existing theories and practice shown to work in a for-profit setting with limited progress toward scaling in the social sector (Bloom and Chatterji 2009; Ebrahim and Rangan 2014; Newbert 2012). Second, abduction places importance on “locally actionable research” with a focus on external validity where researchers can examine variable relationships and explore background factors in the complex environments where they occur (Janiszewski and Van Osselaer 2022). Here, the many causes of social ills are complex and often local, making a flexible and adaptable scaling framework essential.…”
