Abdominal Adiposity and Physical Inactivity Are Positively Associated with Breast Cancer: A Case-Control Study

Abstract: Objective To examine whether breast cancer is associated with body composition and level of physical activity, considering the menstrual status. Methods This was a case-control study with 116 women recently diagnosed with breast cancer and 226 controls. Body composition was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and cardiometabolic risk was assessed by conicity index and waist-to-height ratio. The short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to estimate the level of physic… Show more

“…Our study reinforces that lifestyle variables have different associations with breast cancer risk based on menopausal status [6,8,11,13,15,27,28]. To our knowledge, this is the first study to carry out an investigation into the effects of lifestyle variables on breast cancer risk based on the menopausal status in Brazilian women.…”

“…There is evidence for a strong association between lifestyle variables and increased breast cancer risk related to menopausal status [6,8,9]. Lifestyle variables most associated with breast cancer include physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, smoking, abdominal, and total adiposity [8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16]. However, data currently available in the literature remain inconclusive and are limited by differing sample populations and methodological variations.…”

“…In Goiânia, there is a high prevalence of alcohol consumption among adolescents, as well as the early onset of alcohol use (Coutinho et al, 2016;Nascente et al, 2016). In addition, physical inactivity, inadequate eating habits and obesity may also have contributed to this increased incidence of the disease (Nascente et al, 2016; Godinho-Mota et al, 2018). The data from the present study showed that one-fourth of the cases of breast cancer evaluated here occurred in women of 40 to 49 years of age.…”

“…The prevalence of breast cancer is increasing . Mammographic density, body fat, and diet are the risk factors for breast cancer . The 12th St Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference proposed that breast cancer be divided into four subtypes using immunohistochemical definitions of estrogen and progesterone receptors, the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and the Ki‐67 labeling, index including Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2, and Triple negative (ductal) subtypes .…”
