A Web-based Decision Support System for Managing Panicle Caterpillars in Sorghum

Abstract: Panicle caterpillars are economically important pests of sorghum throughout the Great Plains of the United States. Sorghum producers, crop consultants, and extension professionals desire to manage panicle caterpillars to minimize economic loss. To manage panicle caterpillars in this manner, sorghum fields must be sampled to facilitate optimal control decisions for this pest complex. The decision support system (DSS) described here contains a simple expert system to calculate the economic threshold for panicle … Show more

“…New crop species require extensive agronomic research and development of production and marketing infrastructure within a region. Increased adoption of integrated pest management practices will be required for early detection of and flexible responses to increased or new pest pressures (Backoulou et al 2014;Nansen and Elliott 2016). For forests and tree-based systems, silvicultural management, including thinning and reduction of tree density, can be used to reduce tree mortality and fire risk (Dinon et al 2013), but may need to become more frequent and aggressive in response to climate change.…”

“…Elliott et al (2004)) have developed a web-based decision system for the green bug (Schizaphis graminum) management that is utilizing four modules: aphid identification, the economic threshold calculator, insecticide selection, and natural enemy identification. More recently, Backoulou et al (2014) have developed a web-based decision support system for managing the economic importance panicle caterpillars in Sorghum. The related decision support system calculates the economic thresholds for this pest, and the related expert system is based on a knowledge representation model.…”
