Type synthesis of two-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) planar mechanisms has been carried out using graph theory to determine the possible kinematic structures of variable compression ratio (VCR) engine mechanisms with two to three independent loops, and has resulted in the structures of 87 mechanisms satisfying search specification. By applying evaluation criteria to the enumerated mechanisms, the kinematic structures of three mechanisms are selected as suitable VCR engine mechanisms and verified by analysis results. In this research, VCR engine mechanisms with revolute joints and only one prismatic joint are enumerated, and the basic method to determine the VCR engine mechanisms with higher pairs is discussed. The procedure used in this research can be utilized to determine the kinematic structures of desired mechanisms and the results can be used as an atlas of two-DOF adjustable slider-crank mechanisms.

The simulation-based investigation of the variable displacement engine is motivated by a desire to enable unthrottled operation at part load, and hence eliminate pumping losses. The mechanism modeled in this work is derived from a Hefley engine concept. Other salient features of the proposed engine are turbocharging and cylinder deactivation. The cylinder deactivation combined with variable displacement further expands the range of unthrottled operation, while turbocharging increases the power density of the engine and allows downsizing without the loss of performance. While the proposed variable displacement turbocharged engine (VDTCE) concept enables operations in a very wide range, running near idle is impractical. Therefore, the VDTCE is integrated with a hybrid powertrain allowing flexibility in operating the engine, elimination of idling and mitigation of possible issues with engine transients and mode transitions. The engine model is developed in AMESim using physical principles and 1-D gas dynamics. A predictive model of the power-split hydraulic hybrid driveline is created in SIMULINK, thus facilitating integration with the engine. The integrated simulation tool is utilized to address design and control issues, before determining the fuel economy potential of the powertrain comprising a VDTCE engine and a hydraulic hybrid driveline.

This paper presents simulation of working process in a new internal combustion engine concept. The main feature of this new internal combustion engine concept is the realization of variable movement of the piston. With this unconventional piston movement it is easy to provide variable compression ratio, variable displacement and combustion during constant volume. These advantages over standard piston mechanism are achieved through synthesis of the two pairs of non-circular gears. Presented mechanism is designed to obtain a specific motion law which provides better fuel consumption of internal combustion engines. For this paper Ricardo/WAVE software was used, which provides a fully integrated treatment of time-dependent fluid dynamics and thermodynamics by means of 1-D formulation.The results obtained herein include the efficiency characteristic of this new heat engine concept. The results show that combustion during constant volume, variable compression ratio and variable displacement have significant impact on improvement of fuel consumption.
