A Tribute to Sidney W. Bijou, Pioneer in Behavior Analysis and Child Development: Key Works That Have Transformed Behavior Analysis in Practice

Abstract: ABAI's newest publication is published twice a year in the spring and fall. This is a peer-reviewed translational publication designed to provide science-based information on best practice in behavior analysis. The largest audience includes practicing behavior analysts, educators and related personnel, staff in settings where behavior analytic services are provided, and scientist-practitioners.

“…Framework Bijou, Peterson, and Ault (1968) formulated the A-B-C framework, also called functional behavior analysis, to observe children in laboratory and naturalistic settings, including schools. This approach offers a systematic way to appraise a temporal sequence of events and may inform prevention and intervention strategies (Espelage et al, 2013;Mendres & Frank-Crawford, 2009). For instance, (A) a teacher-student conflict may precede (B) an act of aggression toward the teacher (Stipek & Miles, 2008); in turn, this act of aggression may then lead to (C) physical and emotional symptoms for the teacher (Wilson et al, 2011).…”

Regarding aggression in schools, functional behavioral analyses have primarily been used to develop and evaluate behavioral interventions for students with disabilities (Mendres & Frank-Crawford, 2009). Wehby, Symons, and Shores (1995) studied A-B-C patterns of teacher-directed aggression perpetrated by students with emotional or behavioral disorders.…”
