A taxonomy of visualization techniques for simulation in production and logistics

Abstract: Simulation has become one of the most important techniques with regard to manufacturing and logistics systems. During modeling and experimenting simulation input and output data have to be presented to different target groups which range from simulation experts and factory planners to representatives of company management, and for different tasks and specific purposes. Different kinds of visualization techniques are used to present the simulation data, from static techniques as charts and layout plans to dynam… Show more

“…There have been numerous attempts at classifying images [Blackwell andEngelhardt 1999, Duke et al 2004], based on data types and tasks [Wehrend and Lewis 1990, Yu and Behrens 1995, Shneiderman 1996, Zhou and Feiner 1998, Wenzel et al 2003, Tory and T. 2004, visualization algorithms and models [Tory andT. 2004, Chi 2000], visual elements [Bertin 1983], mappings between data and visual elements [Mackinlay 1986, Rogowitz and Treinish 1993, Zhang 1996, Zhou et al 2002b, Zhou et al 2002a, as well as subject sorting of conventional methods of presentation [Lohse et al 1990].…”

“…The application areas of KPIs include visibility of changes, measurement of current state, comparison of targets and actual business results, decision support, support for coordination and adequate presentation of the information [8] [9]and [10]. Dedicated recommendations for visualization of KPIs can be found in [11]. An investigation of different kinds of data visualization for expert support started in 1960s with the work of Jacques Bertin und Edward Tufte [12] [13].…”

“…Wenzel [51] indica que la animación como técnica de visualización demuestra fácilmente la pluralidad de la visualización. Wenzel et al [52] presentan una taxonomía de técnicas de visualización para simulación en las áreas de producción y logística que aporta una base para seleccionar la técnica de visualización correcta para un determinado grupo objetivo.…”
