A Systematic Review of the Use of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Sports Medicine as a New Treatment for Tendon and Ligament Injuries

Abstract: Presently, PRP use in tendon and ligament injuries has several potential advantages, including faster recovery and, possibly, a reduction in recurrence, with no adverse reactions described. However, only 3 randomized clinical trials have been conducted.

“…To this end, platelet rich plasma (PRP), a natural concentrate of many growth factors [182][183][184], is under intense investigation. PRP has been proposed as a therapy for the treatment of equine tendon injuries, with data demonstrating development and maturation of a healing tendon tissue, based on improved metabolic activity, increased failure strength and elastic modulus of the repairing tissues and increased neovascularisation, over the saline injected counterparts in an equine superficial digital flexor tendon model [185][186][187][188].…”

“…It is currently recognized as an effective treatment for diabetic wounds [10], surgical wounds [9], and musculoskeletal injuries [11]. There have been reports of generally positive patient outcomes with a very low occurrence rate of adverse events, and while there have not been a large number of randomized clinical trials performed for some of the desired applications, such as ligament and tendon repair [12], the application of PRP for other conditions such as osteoarthritis has definitively yielded better results than alternatives such as hyaluronic acid [13] and corticosteroids [14].…”

“…Na Medicina humana ainda há a necessidade de mais estudos prospectivos, randomizados, controlados, duplo cego, e de duração suficiente com os requerimentos necessários para oferecer o poder apropriado. (FOSTER et al, 2009;SANCHEZ et al, 2009;TAYLOR et al, 2011). Na Medicina equina a necessidade de trabalhos com alto nível de evidência e adequado delineamento experimental é ainda mais urgente, dada à escassez de resultados advindos de estudos bem construídos.…”
