Brokers are widely used in distributed information systems such as Multi-agent systems and distributed databases. Yet, there has not been a detailed analysis of Brokers' architecture and no general solution has been proposed on how the Brokers' tasks have to be accomplished. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of these tasks, and an implementation based on OWL-S. We show that while OWL-S is adequate to provide all the information that is needed by the Broker, the straightforward implementation of the Broker using OWL-S results in a paradoxical situation. We solve this paradox by extending the Process Modeling language of OWL-S. Finally, we propose a solution to a number of issues that arise in the brokered management of the interaction between Web services such as the abstraction from queries to capabilities required to solve that query, and management of the knowledge required by the Broker to control the multi-party interaction.

Abstract. Semantic web technology is more and more often applied to a large spectrum of applications where domain knowledge is conceptualized and formalized (Ontology) as a support for diversified processing (Reasoning) operated by machines. Moreover through a subtle joining of human reasoning (cognitive) and mechanical reasoning (logic-based), it is possible for humans and machines to share complementary tasks. To name few of those applications areas: Corporate Portals and Knowledge Management, E-Commerce, E-Work, Healthcare, E-Govemment, Natural Language understanding and Automated Translation, Information search, Data and Services Integration, Social networks and collaborative filtering, Knowledge Mining, etc. From a social and economic perspective, this emerging technology should contribute to growth in economic wealth, but it must also show clear cut value in our everyday activities in being technology transparent and efficient. The uptake of Semantic Web technology by industry is progressing slowly. One of the problems is that academia is not always aware of the concrete problems that arise in industry. Conversely, industry is not often well informed about the academic developments that can potentially meet its needs. In this paper we present an ongoing work in the cross-fertilization between industry and academy. In particular, we present a collection of applications fields and use cases from enterprises which are interested in the promises of Semantic Web technology. We explain our approach in the analysis of the industry needs. We summarize industrial knowledge processing requirements in the form of a typology of knowledge processing tasks. These results are intended to focus academia on the development of plausible knowledge-based solutions for concrete industrial problems, and therefore, facilitate the uptake of Semantic Web technology within industry.

With the evolution of Web service technology, services will not only become increasingly sophisticated, but also move into the area of business-to-consumer and peer-to-peer interactions. Because of todays wide variety of services offered to perform a specific task, there is a need for mediation infrastructures able to support humans or agents in the eventual selection of appropriate services. It is a common opinion that such issues should be solved adopting semantically rich unambiguous descriptions. Hence, ontologies should be used to describe services, to ease their discovery and selection. In order to perform such a selection, a matchmaking procedure, based on semantic descriptions similarity, is needed. Technologies developed for the Semantic Web based on theoretical studies on Artificial Intelligence, particularly on Description Logics, can help in this sense. As the Semantic Web is conceived as an extension of the current one, technologies developed explicitly for they both must be used synergically in order to provide a semantic layer to approaches such as UDDI registries, using OWL formatted descriptions. In this paper we present a framework for discovery of services, stored in an UDDI registry, which exposes a description whose semantic can be modeled using OWL-DL based formalism. In order to perform this task, methodologies to compute semantic differences between two descriptions and non-standard inference services have been investigated and exploited in an implemented system. * Partial funding provided by projects PON CNOSSO and MS3DI
