A Survey of Map-based Mobile Guides

Abstract: Abstract. In this chapter, we present an overview of mobile guides that rely on maps or map-like representations in providing their services. We discuss technical issues as well as problems related to human factors that mobile guides have to cope with in order to assist their respective users. The main part of the chapters describes a number of relevant systems in the field of mobile guides, ranging from influential work such as Cyberguide to systems that offer unique services such as TellMaris. “…There have been several research works focusing on map-based mobile services (Meng et al, 2008), mapbased mobile travel guides (Baus et al, 2005), recommender systems (Adomavicius & Tuzhilin, 2005;Burke, 2007), and travel RSs (Ricci, 2002;Fesenmaier et al, 2006). In this section, we first discuss traditional recommendation techniques, and then we focus on related works that aim to integrate mobile computing, map visualization and recommendation technologies in providing personalized travel products and services to tourists.…”

“…Now, the field has advanced and context modelling has emerged as a major direction in context-aware research. The past few years have also shown an increasing effort to apply context in other research fields such as information retrieval [Cool andSpink, 2002, Ingwersen et al, 2005], geographic information systems [Baus et al, 2005] Personalisation is applied in all these areas but hardly addressed with the same far-reaching scope. This thesis reviews Kobsa's and Brusilovsky's framework on personalisation and contributes a multidisciplinary and integrative extension for this framework for the benefit of both researchers and practitioners.…”

“…Previous work on mobile guides both in academia and for commercial applications (see [2] for a survey) mainly focusses on systems supporting pedestrians in urban environments. Frequently, these systems relies on the use of landmarks for navigation support.…”
