“…The result also reveals, for the first time, the occurrence of N. caninum infection in (Huong et al 1998;Duong et al 2008), Thailand (Suteeraparp et al 1999;Chanlun et al 2006), Malaysia (Cheah et al 2004), and the Philippines (Konnai et al 2008). The seroprevalence was not significantly associated with the age which might result from an inadequate grouping or suggest an effective transplacental transmission of N. caninum from the infected dam to her calf.…”

“…In previous surveys conducted in the Philippines, the prevalence of B. bigemina, A. marginale, and T. evansi in the water buffalo were 10.3%, 4.4%, and 2.9%, respectively (Konnai et al, 2008;Mingala et al, 2009). More recently, surveys for tickborne pathogens have been conducted in Cebu Island (Ybañez et al, 2013a,b).…”

“…This virus has a high affinity for leucocytes and reduces their numbers in infected animals. This immunosuppression potentiates the effects of other pathogens, including abortifacient ones, such as Neospora caninum (Bjorkman et al, 2000;Konnai et al, 2008).…”

“…Factors that have been reported to increase the risk of abortion in dairy cattle herds include: being a heifer; being a cow of more than 10 years old; feeding on communal pastures; lack of vaccination against abortifacient diseases, hygiene, animal management and reproductive problems such as retained placentae, dystocia, uterine prolapse and stillbirth in the previous pregnancies (Waldner and Garcia, 2013;Waldner, 2014). Risk factors such as environmental (nutrition, temperature extremes and toxins, among others), management (crowding and use of natural mating), geographical factors and infectious factors, with infections contributing up to 90% of the abortions also reported (Konnai et al, 2008;Mekonen et al, 2010). Environmental high temperature may affect inside-pens temperature and performance of dairy cattle.…”
