Summary Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are emergent concepts in terms of infrastructure‐less communication. The data dissemination is usually done using broadcast schemes. Data broadcast in VANETs is a challenging issue due to the high mobility vehicles and the varying density. On one hand, these vehicles have to share and disseminate the safety‐critical information, in real time, to other intended vehicles. On the other hand, the existing broadcast solutions do not succeed, till now, to fulfill VANETs requirements especially in terms of performance and QoS. In this paper, we propose a new QoS‐aware broadcast method in order to face VANETs communications challenges. We choose to adapt a concept originally devoted to mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and join it to other specific VANET techniques to introduce a new broadcasting protocol in the aim of optimizing QoS fulfilment. The proposed solution is fundamentally based on enhanced kinetic strategy assisted with fuzzy logic for QoS‐aware multipoint relay (MPR). The protocol efficiency is eventually tested through an experimental study and compared with existing methods. The results prove the over‐performance of the proposed solution.

Abstract-In this article, we propose an Opportunistic information dissemination protocol by mixing both flooding and an enhanced DHVN (Dissemination protocol for heterogeneous Cooperative Vehicular Network) protocol, allowing them to run opportunistically in a Manhattan plan. Special additional logic is added to the existing version of DHVN protocol in order to efficiently disseminate information in two steps: 1) by adding three tags, Initial Diffusion, Standard DHVN and DHVN Near Intersection; the Initial Diffusion tag is used for the first flooding transmission only and 2) by changing the SNF (Store and Forward) period by making it adaptive depending on the region. Detailed simulation results show that our opportunistic protocol outperforms the DHVN protocol by analyzing its performances using an integrated framework VNS.

The specific characteristics of vehicular ad hoc networks, such as high speed of nodes and frequent topology changes, impose challenges for the routing process. In addition, the advent of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) concept along with the autonomous and connected cars contribute to the proliferation of new innovative applications with different quality of service requirements, rising new challenging issues for data transfer.In this article, we review the different taxonomies of vehicular routing protocols, while giving an insight into the design of geographical protocols. Then, we outline several optimization techniques and paradigms used to enhance the routing process. Moreover, in order to promote the deployment of robust IoV routing protocols at large scale, we provide some directions for future research work.
