The accelerated evolution in computing and transmission automation of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has led to enormous research standards that attract many researchers and industries. This century of the Internet of Things (IoT) is propulsive to the routine vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) in the IoV. It has emerged as one of the major driving forces for innovations in the intelligent vehicular industry. The World Health Organization (WHO) report confirms that approximately 1.35 million people die because of accidents on the road every year. This requires considerable attention to incorporate more and more safety measures into the automobile industry. Intelligent transportation systems can help bridge the gap between the traditional and the intelligent automotive industry by connecting vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I), hence adding much safety in vehicular communication. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) which discusses the architectures of IoV including layer types, functions of layers, application area, and communication type supported. Further, it also provides an in-depth insight into state-of-the-art Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols and routing protocols used in IoV communication. The routing protocol comparative summarization considers important parameters which include communication types broadcast, unicast, cluster, multicast, forwarding strategy, recovery strategy, availability of map, and the type of environment urban or highway. The summarization of various protocols highlights strengths, research gaps, and application areas. Finally, the paper addresses various research challenges along with potential future enhancements for the IoV communication.

In the Internet of Things (IoT), the advancement of the new modern era of Internet-off driving, known as the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), is aimed at the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to improve road safety and traffic. Therefore, IoV is better for traffic management. But perhaps, the main challenges in this type of network are that timely decision to make adequate decisions by a driver under certain conditions of rapid change in topology, high vehicular mobility, and frequent link failures is hard to improve road safety. Therefore, an optimized and congestion-free route is required to collect real-time data from vehicles. Thus, some of the latest bioinspired optimization routing algorithms in the IoV environment are presented in this study. Hence, monitoring speed limits, pollution checks, and emergency responses to traffic accidents should also be considered while performing vehicle routing to avoid traffic problems. In the previous decades, many route-directing protocols for the IoV environment have been proposed that can handle the requirements of reliability and security. But such routing of protocols suffers from high complexity and scalability limitations in big-scale networks, routing overlays, etc. Therefore, their strengths, weaknesses, and critical characteristics are compared using various criteria for such algorithms. Then, a suggestion is made to propose a prescribed combined model of a multimodular bioinspired approach to IoV routing. Finally, the main future directions of research in this sector are highlighted.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has risen from ubiquitous computing to the Internet itself. Internet of vehicles (IoV) is the next emerging trend in IoT. We can build intelligent transportation systems (ITS) using IoV. However, overheads are imposed on IoV network due to a massive quantity of information being transferred from the devices connected in IoV. One such overhead is the network connection between the units of an IoV. To make an efficient ITS using IoV, optimization of network connectivity is required. A survey on network optimization in IoT and IoV is presented in this study. It also highlights the backdrop of IoT and IoV. This includes the applications, such as ITS with comparison to different advancements, optimization of the network, IoT discussions, along with categorization of algorithms. Some of the simulation tools are also explained which will help the research community to use those tools for pursuing research in IoV.
