A study on vibration of Setar: stringed Persian musical instrument

Abstract: Knowing how a musical instrument vibrates can benefit the tonal characteristics shaping of the instrument. In this research, an approach for investigating the mode shapes and natural frequencies of Setar body is addressed. First, mechanical properties of wood used in the production of Setar are analyzed experimentally. Then a numerical modal test is performed to find the mode shapes and natural frequencies of Setar structure. To validate the results obtained by the numerical method, experimental modal testing … Show more

“…In this regard, the critical components, such as the soundboard and neck, were defined using a homogeneous linear orthotropic material model, which takes into account their susceptibility to deformation. The remaining components were assumed to be made of homogeneous linear isotropic material [34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41]. The material properties assigned to the instrument's components in the analysis setup are given in Table 2.…”

“…Most of the studies on the plucked stringed instruments are focused on the guitar, and traditional instruments are less studied. Pedrammehr et al [75] studied the vibration of the setar, a long-necked lute-type plucked Persian musical instrument, via FEM modeling and simulations. The 3D CAD model of the setar assembly was created via 3D laser scanning.…”

“…From a metrical point of view, pins have the function of pitch marking [5][6]. The definition of pins is preferred to its metrical meaning, i.e., all stringed instruments with pitch marking are classified as instruments with pins [7]. The Pipa's playing style, shape, structure, and Gui position have inherited many of the characteristics of the ancient short-necked pear-shaped Pipa while at the same time developing the unique style of the Nanyin Pipa within the context of the Nanyin as a musical genre [8][9].…”
