A study on dispersion and characterisation of α-mangostin loaded pH sensitive microgel systems

Abstract: Backgroundα-Mangostin was extracted with methanol from the rind of mangosteen fruit and purified by using silica gel column chromatography technique. The compound is characterised using infrared, 13C and 1H NMR as well as UV–vis spectroscopy. The α-mangostin dispersion in colloidal systems was studied by incorporating it with an ionic microgel, poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide)-co-2VP at different pH.ResultThe DLS result showed the size of microgel-α-mangostin mixture declined from 548 nm to 200 nm upon the increme… Show more

“…The other peaks appearing at 1638, 1440, 1279, and 1077 cm −1 represented C=O stretching of carbonyl group, aromatic C=C stretching, C-O-C stretching of methoxy group, and C-O-C stretching, respectively [27,28]. C-H stretching from methyl groups was indicated by two peaks at 2853 and 2923 cm −1 [5]. The GME was therefore rich in hydroxyl (O-H), carbonyl (C=O), and methoxy (C-O-C) groups as previously found [28].…”

“…α-M in the hydrogel affects the hydrodynamic diameter profile of microgels. When α-M is absorbed in the surface of microgel particle and not in filtrated into matrices of the gel, the gel will be fully swollen [42,43]. In this study, α-M in ChAlg/α-M HF was in the surface of the hydrogel film by intermolecular interaction between α-M at the 21st and 22nd hydrogen atom of Alg increasing the number of water that penetrated the network through hydrogen bond, resulting in the increasing of swelling ratio of ChAlg/α-M HF.…”
