A simple table lookup method for PET/CT partial volume correction using a point-spread function in diagnosing lymph node metastasis

Abstract: We developed a simple table lookup correction method for the partial volume effect of PET/CT. This new method is considered to be clinically useful for the diagnosis of cervical LN metastasis. Further examination with a greater number of subjects is required to corroborate its clinical usefulness.

“…Radioactivity distribution in the liver was homogeneous; therefore, a large representative region of interest was deemed sufficient for analytical purposes. Data (percentage injected dose per gram of tissue [ID/g]) were corrected for partial volume effect and spillover (12) by using calibration factors obtained from scanning a cylinder that contained phantoms of different sizes, with phantom-to-background activity ratios ranging from 3:1 to 25:1 (13). Image quality was compared at different time points after injection to determine whether imaging at early time points was feasible.…”

“…In non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients the association between primary tumor SUVmax and overall TNM stage disappeared after PVC [ 25 ]. For nodal staging using SUV, non-significant trends of increased accuracy for breast, head and neck squamous cell, and thyroid cancer (from 80%, 66% and 95% to 84%, 71% and 100%, respectively) [ 26 , 27 , 31 ], and decreased accuracy for nasopharyngeal and prostate cancer (from 84% and 85% to 73% and 80%, respectively) were observed [ 32 , 33 ]. The study investigating accuracy of nodal staging of nasopharyngeal cancer did observe a large increase in accuracy, from 14 to 71%, when stratifying for lesion size (6–7 mm diameter) [ 32 ].…”

“…The details of this method have been previously described. 19,20 Based on the phantom studies, recovery coefficient (RC) curves for each device were first generated. The RC of each sphere was expressed as the ratio of the maximum radioactivity of each sphere to that of the 37 mm sphere for each SB ratio.…”

“…Although several methods of performing partial volume correction (PVC) have been proposed, [15][16][17][18] we previously developed a simple table lookup method for PVC. 19,20 This method is easily applicable to different PET scanners and protocols. However, the application of this method in clinical examinations has not been performed using different PET scanners.…”
