Recovery of resources from waste streams present important opportunities in mitigating environmental and energy challenges in many countries. In this paper, we develop an optimization‐based approach to study the robustness of resource recovery systems in achieving economic feasibility under feedstock uncertainty. Two key characteristics of the feedstock that influence recovery performance are its volume and composition. We propose models of feedstock robustness functions to perform robustness analysis with respect to these two characteristics, and also propose a composite robustness index as the optimization criterion for the problem of technology and capacity planning of recovery systems. We show that the proposed models have computationally attractive reformulations for the robustness analysis and optimization problems. In particular, the robustness analysis model solves either a small number of linear programs in several special cases, or a small number of linear mixed integer programs in general. Correspondingly, the design optimization problem can be solved either via the solution of a small number of linear mixed integer programs, or via a cutting plane approach. Finally, we demonstrate, through some numerical studies, the insights and values of using the proposed models in evaluation and optimization of organic waste‐to‐energy recovery systems.

This research work focuses on the application of IoT (Internet of Things) in the field of waste recycling. We propose an energy efficient and low cost prototype system for a recycling bin. In an attempt to ease sorting during waste disposal, the system identifies the type of waste material which is being discarded and automatically opens the corresponding bin. Being battery operated and providing real-time service imply that downtime due to power shortage must be kept at a minimum. Our approach focuses on a novel wake-up technique applied to an Arduino microcontroller which controls the opening and closing of the bin lids. Our technique reduces power consumption of the microcontroller by allowing it to be in deep sleep mode when not in use. This is achieved by concatenating a wake-up bit at the beginning of a request to wake up the sleeping microcontroller. It then, executes the request and goes back to sleep. Our experiments demonstrate an increase in battery life of more than 3 hours when compared to the standard full power mode usage. Also, we introduce QR (Quick Response) code to identify the type of waste products, which is less costly and more environmental friendly than RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag based solutions.

Municipal Solid Waste in Goiás (Brazil): Current Scenario and Projections for the Future

The production of municipal solid waste (MSW) has increased annually worldwide. This situation can be verified in the municipalities of Brazil, that produce more MSW and have difficulty in managing their waste resulting in harmful consequences for the environment and ecosystems. For instance, in the State of Goiás, most of the produced MSW are sent to dumps. In this context, the goal of this study was to create a projection for the amount of MSW that will be generated in each of the 246 municipalities of Goiás by 2040. To do so, a population projection from 2015 to 2040 was done, alongside its correspondent MSW production and identification of the current MSW managing systems in the State. Results show that, by 2040, Goiás will have more than 8.7 million inhabitants, 32% more than 2015. However, 88% of the municipalities will continue to have less than 50 thousand inhabitants. The municipalities of bigger dimension, on the other hand, will be concentrated mainly in the Goiânia Metropolitan area and surroundings of the Federal District regions. In terms of MSW production, an increase of about 35% in waste generation is estimated for 2040 when compared to 2015. In 2040, the Goiânia Metropolitan, surroundings of the Federal District and the Southwest regions of Goiás will produce 70% of the State MSW. Regarding the produced MSW technological routes, in 2015 about 70% of the State waste went to either unlicensed landfills or dumps, while 8% did not even get collected, having ended up in wastelands or waterways. Considering this panorama in Goiás, what will be the management of MSW in 2040 if nothing is done?
