A review on medicinal plant extracts and their active ingredients against methicillin-resistant and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus is among the pathogens capable of developing a broad spectrum of infections in human beings. In addition to the hospital, the bacterium is present in the community and has a high resistance to antibiotics, which is also increasing on an ongoing basis. Resistance to β-lactam antibiotic family is one of the concerns about the bacterium that has encountered the treatment of such infections with difficulty. Due to the increased resistance and importance of this bacterium, new strategies are n… Show more

“…Staphylococcus aureus is a major human pathogen that causes a broad spectrum of infections, including skin infections, food poisoning, and nosocomial infections [1,2]. Its potential for rapid resistance to many antibiotics has led to the emergence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) [3].…”

“…The knowledge for uses medicinal plants against various diseases seems to be accumulated in areas where the consumption of herbal medicines is still important and continued, greatly [29][30][31][32]. An important issue in the use of medicinal plants is that a plant is usually used for several diseases [33][34][35][36]. For example, Azadirachta indica other than stomachache is also used against skin diseases, smallpox, rheumatism, etc.…”

“…β-lactam is one of the most essential groups of antibiotics. In bacteria, the crucial method of β-lactam resistance is the production of βlactamase which inhibits the β-lactams by way of disrupting the amide bond of their β-lactam ring (2).…”
