Alginates derived from macroalgae have been widely used in a variety of applications due to their stability, biodegradability and biocompatibility. Alginate was extracted from Egyptian Sargassum latifolium thallus yielding 17.5% w/w. The chemical composition of S. latifolium is rich in total sugars (41.08%) and uronic acids (47.4%); while, proteins, lipids and sulfates contents are 4.61, 1.13 and 0.09%, respectively. NMR, FTIR and TGA analyses were also performed. Crystallinity index (0.334) indicates alginate semicrystalline nature. Sodium alginate hydrolysate was evaluated as Chlorella vulgaris growth promoter. The highest stimulation (0.7 g/L biomass) was achieved by using 0.3 g/L alginate hydrolysate supplementation. The highest total soluble proteins and total carbohydrates were 179.22 mg/g dry wt and 620.33 mg/g dry wt, respectively. The highest total phenolics content (27.697 mg/g dry wt.), guaiacol peroxidase activity (2.899 µmol min−1 g−1) were recorded also to 0.3 g/L alginate hydrolysate supplementation. Riboflavin-entrapped barium alginate-Arabic gum polymeric matrix (beads) was formulated to achieve 89.15% optimum drug entrapment efficiency (EE%). All formulations exhibited prolonged riboflavin release over 120 min in simulated gastric fluid, followed Higuchi model (R2 = 0.962–0.887) and Korsmeyer–Peppas model with Fickian release (n ranges from 0.204 to 0.3885).

In Egypt during the extreme heat in summer, numerous amounts of air conditioners -that provide a cooler environment -are producing a huge amount of outlet wastewater. The continuous flow of this water causing great damage to buildings' façades. Therefore, the paper presents an innovative product solution made from algae that aim to reuse this wastewater as a self-watering landscape façade element that acts as an irrigation system. The prototype is designed from concept to manufacturing to implementation based on 3D printing with a bio-algae filament. With the dual algae ability in producing O2 and absorbing CO2, the fabrication follows a spiral engrave path to collect and cool the water droplet and ensure a smooth flow to be suitable for plantation. A path strategy is used during the printing for minimal structure supports aimed at saving unnecessary material waste and fabrication time. Solar radiation and water simulation are tested to measure the effect of the algae and to ensure the water fluidity from the AC tube till reaching the soil. The solar radiation results record a solar reduction from 316.43 to 80.71 kWh/m 2 after adding the algae panel to a building façade with a decrease of 6°C in the water temperature. The design demonstrates highly significant materials and resource savings, where no supports are needed during printing. The finding addresses the manufacturing of a low-cost algae product using cleaner technology as additive manufacturing. Given the alarming increase in the new industrial materials, algae will allow designers to explore their benefits regarding their O2 production and CO2 absorption, which will influence the façades to be smarter and sustainable using large-scale of PBRphotobioreactors -applications as a nature-based alternative to large glass surfaces with the potentials of additive manufacturing. This can reduce plastic production using fossil fuels to be eco-friendly.

Algae are everywhere in this planet. They have been used in a wide variety of industries because of unique chemical composition and high concentration of bioactive substances. The agar, alginate and carrageenan are products which come from the gelling, thickening and stabilizing properties of algae. In addition algae is considered to be an important supplement and an additive to handy foods. They are also added up to products of fish and oils, to promote their quality, as well as to meat products like steaks, pastry , frankfurters and sausages. Algae is also used in grain products and their derivatives , like bread, pasta and flour. Because of their critical characteristics algae plays a role in the fermented functional food structure. The majority of fermented products made with algae are dairy products and their derivatives. Mixed fermented products, which contain an intensive population of lactic acid bacteria and algae, contain biologically active metabolites of natural origin, which enables not only the creation of high-nutrient products, but also the creation of a novel types of fermented food.
