A Review of Qualitative Methods in Health Communication Research

Abstract: This paper examines the ways that qualitative inquiry can be especially useful for gathering relevant descriptive data that can provide a deep understanding of health communication issues and processes, as well as to provide evidence-based guidance for addressing key challenges of health care delivery and promotion. This article promotes methodological diversity in research designs and illustrates the value of employing qualitative methods such as ethnography and grounded theory in health communication researc… Show more

“…Five of the 7 studies employing a quasi‐experimental design did not have a control or comparison group for the interventions, and almost all of the quasi‐experimental research designs used a pretest/posttest design. These findings suggest the need for conducting additional studies examining CA within health professional education that utilizes both rigorous and diverse research designs and methods (Kreps, 2011; Ngenye & Kreps, 2020).…”

“…Future studies should have a clear operational definition of healthcare experience to determine its possible relationship with CA in health professions students. The absence of qualitative data in any of the studies limits the understanding of the results of the quantitative data analysis. Qualitative data could improve the understanding of CA in faculty in nursing, pharmacy, and other health-related programs, positively influencing pedagogical choices, student interactions, and student evaluation(Ngenye & Kreps, 2020). Increased rigor of quantitative research design is also needed, including comparison groups and more longitudinal designs to monitor CA levels over time after an intervention or throughout a program(Kreps, 2011).…”

“…In addition, findings suggested that there were several areas where the insurance program did not meet user expectations. We believe this is an appropriate and powerful research approach for phenomenologically examining the essence of experience from the perspectives of those enrolled in the new HIPs (Bourgeault et al, 2010; Kreps, 2008; Ngenye & Kreps, 2020; Rapport, 2004).…”

“…The research approach used is an interactive model. This interactive model consists of several components that influence each other and are influenced, namely: objectives, conceptual framework, methods, research questions and validity (Maxwell, 2014;Ngenye & Kreps, 2020). This research adopts an ethnographic-anthropological approach and seeks to understand how local wisdom affects the community's living environment (Rashid et al, 2019).…”
