A Review of Power Electronics Based Microgrids

Abstract: The increased penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is challenging the entire architecture of conventional electrical power system. Microgrid paradigm, featuring higher flexibility and reliability, becomes an attractive candidate for the future power grid. In this paper, an overview of microgrid configurations is given. Then, possible structure options and control methods of DER units are presented, which is followed by the descriptions of system controls and power management strategies for AC micr… Show more

“…Distributed generation (DG) units integrate various types of DERs into networks with power electronic converters serving as interface devices. The concept of microgrid emerges to overcome the problem introduced by the high penetration of DG units [1], [2]. Microgrid is a small-scale power system with a localized cluster of DG units and loads.…”

“…A DG based microgrid operates in either the grid-connected mode or the islanded mode [3]. In the grid-connected mode, a microgrid can be defined as a current source because it supplies power to the main grid by synchronizing the phase of the PCC (Point of Common Coupling) voltage.…”

“…A number of control approaches have been developed to achieve a good load sharing among parallel inverters [4]. The droop control schemes, among other options, have shown superior performances in terms of the reliability and costs, thanks to the absence of communication links [5].…”
