A rarely seen cause for empyema: Leuconostoc mesenteroıdes

Abstract: Leuconostoc species are Gram-positive, non-motile, vancomycin-resistant bacteria placed within the family of Streptococcaceae. They naturally exist in food and are important in the sauerkraut, milk and wine industries due to their role in fermentation. Infections caused by Leuconostocs are generally reported in immunosuppressed patients with an underlying disease, or in those who were previously treated with vancomycin. Central venous catheter insertion is also a risk factor for introducing bacteria into the b… Show more

“…Species were generally considered non-pathogenic and of little significance in clinical microbiology until several occurrences of Leuconostoc infections were reported in the literature. It is an emerging pathogen responsible for many infections (15,16). Standard phenotypic methods were used in this research to identify isolates.…”

“…Leuconostoc species exist in fermented foods and beverages industries due to their role in fermentation (sauerkraut, milk, cereals fermented drinks, and palm wine) (23). This bacterium is found naturally in plants and vegetables (16). Humans may be infected by exposure to unpasteurized products or by contact with vegetables or plants (24).…”

“…This microorganism may cause endocarditis [ 7 ], urinary tract infections [ 8 ], intrabdominal infections [ 9 ] and catheter-associated bloodstream infections [ 10 ]. There are also case reports of bacterial meningitis and empyema [ 11 ] caused by L. mesenteroides in patients with severe immunosuppression [ 12 , 13 ]. Most of the affected patients are children or neonates [ 3 , 4 , 6 , 9 , 12 ].…”
