A rare case of malignant chondroid syringoma of scalp

Abstract: Chondroid syringoma represents the cutaneous counterpart of mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) of salivary glands, therefore it is also termed “mixed tumour of the skin.” It is generally accepted that there are both eccrine and apocrine variants of mixed tumors of skin. Malignant chondroid syringoma is a malignant eccrine neoplasm that is very rarely encountered in radio-pathological and clinical practice. Unlike the benign variety which occurs most often on the head and neck, malignant chondroid syringomas are… Show more

“…[ 12 , 34 ] There are also reports that rare malignant MTS exist in the occipital regions, which involves the dura. [ 35 ] Metastasis of tumor can occur in lymph nodes, lung, and bone, [ 36 ] and even the central nervous system. [ 37 ] Thus, we recommended that follow-up should be performed after complete resection of malignant MTS.…”

“…[ 9 ] Excessive mucoid matrix, numerous mitoses, and poorly differentiated chondroid components are important indicators of malignancy. [ 2 , 10 ] The histological features criteria of malignant CS are cytologic atypia, infiltrative margins, satellite tumor nodules, tumor necrosis, and involvement in deeper tissues. [ 11 , 12 ] The CS tumor in our case was located in the toe tip and the greatest dimension of the resected tumor was nearly 3 cm, therefore, we must suspect the possibility of its malignancy.…”

“…3 Only 30 malignant cases of chondroid syringoma were described as of 2013, 7 and these are more likely to occur in women (1.7:1) and in the extremities (60%; 20% in head and neck). 8 Atypia, necrosis, abundant mitoses or mucoid matrix, infiltrative margins, and poorly differentiated chondroid components may all suggest malignancy.…”

“…8 Atypia, necrosis, abundant mitoses or mucoid matrix, infiltrative margins, and poorly differentiated chondroid components may all suggest malignancy. 7, 9 The treatment in these cases remains excisional biopsy, although such patients should be followed closely due to high risk of recurrence.…”
