A Prospective Randomized Comparative Study of Intra-Cervical Foley's Catheter Insertion Versus Pge2 Gel for Pre- Induction Cervical Ripening

Abstract: Cervical ripening refers to a process of preparing the cervix for induction of labor by promoting effacement and dilatation as measured by Bishop's score. 1 The success of labor induction depends on the cervical status at the time of induction. It is generally predicted that the patients with a poor Bishop's score 3 have unacceptably higher rates of failure of induction. 2,3 It was also shown that a low Bishop's score is associated with increased rates of cesarean sections, maternal fever and fetal asphyxia.… Show more

“…The risk for side effects is related to the prostaglandins and preparations used, dosage, route of administration and maternal characteristics . Several studies evaluated the safety and efficacy of various methods of prostaglandin administration for labor induction . However, potential demographic and clinical characteristics that can affect the success of cervical ripening and the risk for complications with prostaglandins, specifically with vaginal Prostaglandin e2 (PGE 2 ) were seldom addressed .…”

“…1 Several studies evaluated the safety and efficacy of various methods of prostaglandin administration for labor induction. [12][13][14][15][16][17] However, potential demographic and clinical characteristics that can affect the success of cervical ripening and the risk for complications with prostaglandins, specifically with vaginal Prostaglandin e2 (PGE 2 ) were seldom addressed. 15,[18][19][20] In addition, the factors evaluated and the precise definition of success or failure of ripening and/or induction are inconsistent.…”
