“…An additional analysis of geographical distribution of these job settings 6 revealed the familiar picture that about half of the counseling psychologists are in Middle Atlantic, East North Central, and Pacific states. This is in general agreement with results of other studies on general APA membership (Clower, 1952;Howard, 1958). It is also interesting to note that male members are heavily represented in New England states, while a large portion of female membeis are found in Pacific states.…”

“…The number of mental health providers across California communities was largely influenced by the total population in those areas (see Table 1). More urban areas clearly had more providers, which is consistent with the findings of previous authors examining psychologists specifically (Barker, 1966;Clower, 1952;Ellis et al, 2009;Knesper et al, 1984;Richards & Gottfredson, 1978). However, the population of a place can predict the number of psychologists and LCSWs in that place but not their concentration, whereas the concentration of MFTs is negatively correlated with the total population.…”

“…Although there is some research regarding the geographic distribution of mental health providers, this body of literature is both small and dated. Clower (1952) used data from the American Psychological Association's membership directory to quantify the distribution of psychologists across the continental United States at the state level. Clower noted that the southern states overall had the lowest concentration of psychologists but higher percentages of African Americans, lower percentages of urban populations, fewer foreign-born Whites, and fewer persons between 18 and 24 in school.…”

“…In 1950, using APA membership for population of psychologists, the ratio of psychologists per 100,000 in the United States was 4.7 (Glower, 1952). In 1968 only Mississippi was below the 1950 level.…”
